FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Baylor track and field opens the national championship season on Wednesday with the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at the University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
The four-day meet begins with the men's first rounds on Wednesday and concludes with the women's national quarterfinals on Saturday evening. BU's first entry will be Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi, with just three attempts to qualify to nationals in the javelin throw, beginning Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Tickets are still available for the meet through the Razorback Ticket Office. For fans not in Fayetteville, live results are provided through Flash Results and the meet will be streamed on SEC Network+.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears hosted the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Clyde Hart Track and Stadium over a weather-filled three-day weekend in Waco. The women's team finished tied for sixth (63 points), while the men took seventh (51 points) in the team standings. BU took six individual event titles, in Demar Francis (400m), Nathaniel Ezekiel (400mH), Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi (javelin), Alexis Brown (long jump), Molly Haywood (pole vault) and the women's 4x100-meter relay of Tiriah Kelley, Kayla Hunt, Brown and Michaela Francois.
OH, HOW THEY'VE FALLEN
The Bears toppled four program records in the outdoor season entering the NCAA Regional Meet. Alexis Brown (22-5, long jump) and Nathaniel Ezekiel (48.00, 400-meter hurdles) each won Big 12 Outdoor Championships on their home track with program-best marks, while the men's 4x100-meter relay of Ricquan Graham, Laurenz Colbert, Kamden Jackson and De'montray Callis went 38.86 for the conference silver medal. In Ghana, Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi took the African Games title with a 271-8, a mark that doesn't count toward collegiate marks, but gives him the program-record mark once again.
DECLARED BEARS
Head coach Michael Ford declared 23 student-athletes in 28 entries for the 2024 NCAA DI West Preliminary Rounds, announced on Thursday by the NCAA.
Leading the pack in the women's selections is Alexis Brown in three events: the long jump, 100 meters and 4x100-meter relay. Makayla Long joins Brown in doubling up for two individual events: the shot put and discus throw. Both 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays on the women's side qualified, with the 4x100 and Molly Haywood (pole vault) ranked with the highest seeds at No. 4.
The men's squad features Laurenz Colbert entered in four events: the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. De'montray Callis and Colbert both declared in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Sitting at the top of his event in the west, Nathaniel Ezekiel's 48-flat gives him the No. 1 seed in the 400-meter hurdles, while Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi enters at No. 3 in the javelin throw. Prosper Nnamdi's actual season- and personal-best throw of 271-8 at the African Games does not count in collegiate rankings but would also land him a first seed in the region.
WHO ELSE BUT ALEXIS
Alexis Brown pocketed the 2024 Big 12 Women's Performer of the Year honor on Thursday after a double championship-winning performance at the Big 12 Championship in Waco. The Kennedale, Texas, native is the first Bear to cross the 22-foot mark in the women's long jump in program history, landing a conference championship-winning 22-5 leap at the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium. Brown set three program records in the event throughout the outdoor season (21-11, 21-11 ½ and 22-5) all at her home track in Waco. Brown also wrote history as the first outdoor women's long jump conference champion in program history in both Big 12 and Southwest Conference eras. Again on Thursday, Brown adds to the history books as just the second Bear tabbed the Big 12 Outdoor Women's Performer of the Year, joining Kiana Horton in 2018.
Also a member of the women's 4x100-meter relay squad, Brown pocketed her second gold medal with the third-fastest 4x1 mark in program history, leading the rest of the field by just under three-tenths of a second. Brown ran the third leg in a title-clinching 43.16-second race.
Brown also had an outstanding year in the 100 meters, running a PB of 11.29 seconds at the Desert Heat Classic in Arizona on April 27, the 36th-best mark in DI competition this season.
