WACO, Texas – Using every inch of her 5-foot-9 frame, Baylor junior defender Hannah Augustyn headed a shot off the crossbar and then went over 5-5 TCU midfielder Jennie Immethun to head the deflection into the net in the Bears' 1-1 tie with the 22nd-ranked Horned Frogs Sunday afternoon at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Despite a dominating 28-6 edge in shots, including 8-2 on goal, TCU (8-2-2, 3-0-2) was shut out until the 73rd minute, when Bella Diorio blasted in the equalizer off an assist from Camryn Lancaster to help the visiting Frogs extend their unbeaten streak to six-consecutive games and stay within two points of the Big 12 leaders.
"It was amazing," Augustyn said of her second goal of the season and fifth in her career. "For my height, I like heading the ball, and I know I can get over it and have some power on it. When I saw it hit the (top woodwork), I was like, 'It's going up.' I didn't see the keeper go for it, so I knew it was just me and the other defender, and I knew I could get over it."
It was one of the few chances for the Bears (6-4-3, 1-2-2), who didn't even get a shot off until the 38th minute of the first half. Their first on goal was Augustyn's header goal in the 14th minute of the second half.
"There was a period of time in the second half where we had quite a bit of possession, and we were really attacking and breaking them down," Baylor coach Michelle Lenard said. "And then, it led to a really good goal. (I'm) happy with the goal. Obviously, I wish we could have finished it off, but a point in that game is good."
Since starting off league play with back-to-back 1-0 losses to Oklahoma State and Arizona, Baylor is on a three-game unbeaten streak with a 4-0 win over Houston and consecutive 1-1 ties against a pair of top-25 teams.
"It's important for us to take that away and recognize that that shows growth," Lenard said. "We're in those games and have opportunities to win them, and that's all we can ask of our team. So, not satisfied, but overall happy with the performance."
Playing against her former teammates, sophomore goalkeeper Azul Alvarez finished one off her career-high with seven saves, including a 1v1 shot that glanced off her face.
"Azul made some huge saves . . to keep us in it, to manage the emotions in the moment," Lenard said. "She transferred from TCU, so that's a heavy burden to carry into the first time you play against your former team. And I think she did a great job managing that."
Lenard also praised a back line of Natalie Vatter, Marissa Gray and Hallie Augustyn, who all played the full 90 minutes.
"Our back line has done a great job all season," she said. "(TCU has) some dynamic attacking players, and our players were disciplined, they stood them up. And if we did get beat, we did a good job covering for one another."
Constantly the aggressor, the Horned Frogs got off six more shots (7-1) than Baylor over the last 16 minutes, but Theresa McCullough forced TCU goalkeeper Olivia Geller to make her only save of the game on a shot to the bottom right of the goal.
The Bears also had some misfortune on a potential free run by Ashley Merrill when the ball hit the referee and play was stopped.
"The moment leading up to it, that probably would have been one of our best opportunities," Lenard said. "Some of that, you've just got to take it in stride, things happen outside of your control."
Playing four of its last six regular-season games on the road, Baylor will face 25th-ranked Texas Tech (9-2-1, 4-0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at John Walker Soccer Complex in Lubbock. The Lady Raiders have won four-straight and are riding an eight-game unbeaten streak since a 2-0 road loss to Utah State on Aug. 25.

Head Coach Michelle Lenard on the game …
"I think looking at the big picture in 90 minutes, I think that's a well-earned point. I think both teams competed well. We had some scary moments for sure, that we had to manage. I thought we did a good job of managing those moments. But we also had some really good moments in possession. We created some good chances in the second half, so not satisfied, but overall, happy with the performance."
