Bears outrebound the Bluejays 45-28 to earn first win in Vegas
LAS VEGAS – Baylor men's basketball began the Players Era Tournament with a bang, dominating Creighton 81-74 on Monday afternoon at the Michelob UTLRA Arena.
In a gritty and tough environment, Baylor (4-0) continued its perfect start to the season, shooting 43-percent from the field. The Bears continued its streak of having at least four players in double-figures in every game this season with Cameron Carr continuing to lead BU in points at 21, including nine rebounds and three assists.
RV/RV Baylor dominated the glass against RV/RV Creighton (3-2), outrebounding the Bluejays 45-28 including a 22-8 ratio on offensive boards. The 22 offensive rebounds are the most by BU against a high-major team since versus Kansas State in 2024. With the assistance on the glass, the Bears made 27 points from second-chance opportunities, the most second-chance points since Baylor played at Oklahoma in 2023.
With the help of Carr (21 points), Dan Skillings Jr. (14 points), Obi Agbim (13 points), Tounde Yessoufou (11 points) and Michael Rataj (10 points), the Bears never trailed against the Bluejays, the first time never trailing in a game since versus Utah (12/31/24).
Caden Powell also secured big minutes off the bench for Baylor with seven points on seven rebounds, five being offensive.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor took the early lead with Agbim hitting the first basket. A three by Skillings Jr. got the Bears rolling with his fourth straight game with a made three-pointer. At the first media timeout, all four made baskets were assisted with the Bears up 10-4.
Isaac Williams IV started heating up on both ends of the floor, forcing a traveling call on the Bluejays' offense, followed by a bucket from beyond the arc on the other end of the floor. Creighton began responding, going three-for-three and bringing it to a one-possession game.
Agbim got hot early, hitting double-figures in the first 10 minutes of the game. Out of Baylor's four games played, Agbim has earned double-digits in three of them. Agbim's 13 points at the under-eight timeout put Baylor up nine points at 27-18.
Baylor's lead kept climbing, going on an 8-0 run and holding Creighton to no field-goals in three minutes to go up with a lead of 40-33. At the half, Carr continued his streak of all four games this season with double-digits to give BU the halftime lead of 44-36.
The Bluejays came out of the half with motive, going on a 6-0 run and forcing two BU turnovers in the first two minutes. Powell picked up big minutes for the Bears, giving the Bears five points off of second-chance points with three offensive rebounds to put BU back on track.
However, Creighton got hot from behind the arc and cut Baylor's lead from six to one, 53-52, in a matter of seconds. At the under-12 timeout, the Bears and Bluejays were knotted up at 60-all with Skillings Jr. grabbing eight points in the second half to reach double-figures in his 45th game of his career.
Carr powered down a dunk and reached him to 14 points while Michael Rataj reached double-digits for his second game this season to give BU a 70-66 lead at the final media timeout. Baylor continued sharing the wealth on offense with all four games this season having at least four players in double-figures.
In the final minute, Creighton cut the lead three, but big defensive stops including a blocked three by Carr with seven seconds left and a slam dunk by Yessoufou in the final second gave Baylor a win in its first game of the week.
