Game notes:
• Baylor reignites its rivalry with Texas on the national stage, facing off in the inaugural Sprouts Farmers Market espnW Invitational at noon on Sunday from Dickies Arena in Fort Worth. The game will be live on ABC and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
• The 112th meeting between the Longhorns and the Bears continues the streak of the I-35 rivals clashing in each of the last 50 years, last facing off on February 1, 2024, at Foster Pavilion. Since 1975, the two programs have seen each other at least twice each season until 2024-25.
• Baylor is ranked 13th in the AP Poll and 14th in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after its 10-1 start to the season.
• The Bear defense sits in the national top 10 in every statistical category: No. 4 in field-goal percentage defense, No. 4 in three-point percentage defense, No. 5 in scoring defense, and No. 10 in defensive rebounds per game (through games on 12/11).
• A 10-1 record through the first 11 games of the season is the second-best start in the Nicki Collen era, behind 2023-24's unscathed non-conference schedule, where BU took an 11-0 record into conference play and stretched it to 14-0 with Big 12 wins over Texas, TCU and Houston before suffering its first setback.
• Sunday's game will be Baylor's 31st against a top-3 team since 2000 and the fourth under Nicki Collen.
• The Bears have won 11 of those top-3 matchups this century and still await their first in the Collen era.
• The program's last win against a top-3 team came Jan. 9, 2020, when Baylor defeated UConn in Hartford.
• Narrowing down to just the top 2 teams in the nation, BU is facing its 20th foe at either No. 1 or No. 2 with a 7-12 record since 2000. Last season's game against No. 1 UCLA in the Coretta Scott King Classic was the first and only matchup with Collen at the helm against one of the top 2 teams in the country.
• Through games on Dec. 11, Baylor is ranked No. 23 in the NET.
• The Bears are 0-1 against Quadrant 1 opponents, with the lone game coming in a five-point loss to Iowa in Orlando. BU's top win came against Duke in Paris to open the season.
• Taliah Scott has made an immediate impact for the Bears, scoring 262 points in 11 games, including 32 against No. 19 Iowa and 30 versus Alabama State.
• Scott's 232 points were the third most by a Baylor player through her first 10 games of a season this century
(2013-14 Odyssey Sims – 304; 2014-15 Nina Davis – 236).
• Jana Van Gytenbeek recorded Baylor's eighth all-time triple-double, and the program's first since 2022, with 10 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in a 90-36 win over Alabama State. Her standout performance places her alongside Brittney Griner, Alexis Jones, and Jordan Lewis as the only Bears to achieve a triple-double.
• 13 assists were the most for a Bear since Feb. 7, 2023, when Jaden Owens had 14 dimes against Oklahoma.
• In a moment that has now gone viral on social media and earned on-air features across national broadcasts, Taliah Scott's three free throws pushed Baylor to 67 points, much to the amusement of more than 3,000 elementary and junior high students from 27 local schools attending the annual Future Bears Day game. The young Bear fans' noise peaked at 137.7 dB during the game, a level comparable to a jet engine during takeoff.
• Scott led the Baylor scoring efforts with 30 points, while Kiersten Johnson scored 13, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs put up a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double and Van Gytenbeek had her stellar day that featured the 10 points.
