Bears break program record for highest field-goal percentage in a game
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball posted a commanding win over Arlington Baptist on Monday afternoon to end its non-conference season, shooting a program-record 73.5-percent from the field and earning the most points in the Scott Drew era, 124-61.
Baylor (10-2) held nothing back in its final game of the calendar year, dominating Arlington Baptist (2-9) with a 63-point marginal victory, ranking tied for fourth in program history. All nine Bears in rotation put points on the board, including two 20-point performances from Tounde Yessoufou and Isaac Williams IV.
Yessoufou, reigning Big 12 Starting Five honoree, tied his career-best with 28 points along with seven rebounds, six steals and five assists. His six steals tied for 13th in program history. The freshman is the first player in Baylor history to record a 25-5-5-5 game.
Williams earned his first start of the season and posted 22 points on 9-for-11 buckets, four steals and three rebounds. Dan Skillings Jr. grabbed 19 points on nine rebounds and a career-high of seven assists. Cameron Carr continued his double-digit streak with 17 points, only missing one bucket on the day. Michael Rataj and Caden Powell both snagged double-doubles, with Rataj boasting 15 points on 12 rebounds and Powell grabbing 12 points on 15 rebounds. It marked Powell's third consecutive game with at least 15 rebounds.
Off the bench, James Goodis made his collegiate debut, earning five points while Will Kuykendall and Drew Perry put up three points each.
THE RUNDOWN
Cameron Carr opened the scoring with a dunk to give Baylor its first bucket, but Arlington Baptist quickly answered with a three. The Bears responded by rattling off a dominant 22-2 run, holding the Patriots to just 1-of-12 shooting during the stretch before a free throw from ABU finally halted the surge.
Dan Skillings Jr. fueled Baylor's fast start with nine points, knocking down the Bears' first triple of the afternoon. Tounde Yessoufou followed with a layup to further extend the lead, pushing Baylor ahead 34-11 and becoming the first Bear to reach double figures.
Baylor went a perfect 8-for-8 from the field over a five-minute span to extend its lead to 24 just past the midway point of the first half. An and-one finish by Michael Rataj made him the fourth Bear to reach double figures in the opening period and swung the momentum back in Baylor's favor following a three from Arlington Baptist.
Carr remained perfect through the first half, shooting 5-for-5 from the field as Baylor posted its highest shooting percentage in a half since 1990, connecting on 79 percent of its attempts (27-of-34). All six Bears who saw the floor reached double figures in the opening half, sending Baylor into the break with a commanding 69-33 lead.
After the break, Arlington Baptist opened the second half with a three, but Skillings Jr. responded with a put-back layup for the Bears. Yessoufou then brought Foster Pavilion to its feet with a breakaway dunk, as Baylor stayed hot to start the half, opening 6-for-6 from the field.
Caden Powell recorded the first double-double of the game early in the second half, marking his second of the season. Michael Rataj followed shortly after with a double-double of his own, his fourth this year.
Will Kuykendall provided an instant spark off the bench, drilling his first shot, a three for the Bears.
