WACO, Texas – Baylor leaned on a pivotal second-half surge to pull away from UTSA, 73-55, on Sunday afternoon at Foster Pavilion.
Jana Van Gytenbeek delivered a season-high 16 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-8 from three. She added three assists and a steal and hit a pair of three pointers to keep the Bears in the green early.
Taliah Scott extended her double-digit scoring streak to 10 games, finishing with 19 points while going 6-of-11 from the field and 6-of 6-at the free throw line. Scott scored Baylor's final basket of the third quarter and opened the fourth with an assist and a layup to help the Bears maintain separation.
Darianna Littlepage-Buggs added 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting, marking her sixth double-digit game this season. She contributed five rebounds and had a team high five steals, tying her career best, helping Baylor convert 16 points off 21 UTSA turnovers.
Kyla Abraham provided her biggest minutes inside, finishing with a season-high eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting day while adding five rebounds. Yuting Deng posted eight points as well and grabbed a season-high five rebounds.
Baylor shot 46.2% from the floor and 81% at the line, while holding UTSA to 37.9% shooting and just 1-of-4 on free throws. Sunday's game was just the second time this season BU lost the battle of the boards, 40-31, but pulled out their first win this year when doing so.
UTSA was led by eight rebounds and Ereauna Hardaway's 15 points. The Roadrunners had their best stretch with a 9-0 run late in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit before Baylor responded with a Van Gytenbeek jumper and a Deng three to restore control.
Baylor held the lead for 34:29 of game time and never trailed after the opening minutes.
BU returns to Foster Pavilion on Tuesday morning to host Alabama State in its annual Future Bears Day game. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. on ESPN+ and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
On Tuesday, the Sideline Club will be utilized to provide seating for season ticket holders who opted in to attend Future Bears Day games during the renewal process. All Sideline Club seating will be general admission for season ticket holders who opted in, with the exception of Courtside Club ticket holders, who will receive their usual seats. All other seats in Foster Pavilion will be utilized as part of the Future Bears Day program.
