Amber Toven records Bears’ only multi-hit performance
WACO, Texas – Baylor Softball narrowly fell against No. 12 Texas Tech, 4-1, Friday night at Getterman Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor battled Texas Tech for most of the game starting in the first inning when BU ended a threat from Texas Tech with a double play from Turiya Coleman to Shaylon Govan.
BU fought back in the bottom half of the inning when Govan walked and Coleman doubled off the top of the wall in right field to put runners on second and third with one out, but a fly out and strikeout stopped the Bears from scoring.
After the Red Raiders got two on in the top of the second, Brooklyn Carter made a snag in centerfield before throwing a runner out at home to stop another run from coming home. Texas tech was able to capitalize during the next at bat and make it a 2-0 game.
Abi Flores and Amber Toven recorded back-to-back singles in the second and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, but it was Texas Tech who turned an inning-ending double play to stop Baylor from scoring for the second-straight inning.
The Bears turned their third double play of the game in the top of the third when Lauren Allred lined out to Amber Toven who tagged out Mihyia Davis at second.
Keeping the Red Raiders off of the board in the third inning, Texas tech battled back and added a solo run in the fourth and fifth innings to take the 3-0 lead before BU got a run back in the bottom half of the third. After a leadoff single from Toven, Ashlyn Wachtendorf reached on a fielder's choice and scored after Presleigh Pilon reached on an error to make it a 3-1 game.
Sitting Texas tech down in order in the sixth, the Red Raiders capitalized on timely hits in the top of the seventh to add a fourth run to their total.
Wachtendorf notched a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh before Brooklyn Carter recorded a 10-pitch at bat that resulted in a single through the left side, but that would be it for the Bears in the game.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Glenn Moore on the performance …
"It was the first time we've played as a unit in all aspects of the game to that level. It was kind of fun to see the team get competitive pitching, I thought Lillie did a great job. She scattered a lot of hits, a lot of mishits that ended up as hits. Credit them for slowing their bats down and getting a barrel on it. Sadie came in and gave them the velocity they needed."
Amber Toven on turning the page …
"Oh absolutely. I think we had to get kicked in the mouth a little bit, but our talent is starting to come together. Like I said right now our biggest word in our team is 'unit'. We need to be a unit. That's what Baylor Softball is. As long as we have that at the forefront of our minds, we're going to do a lot of good things like we preached before the season."
