Leah Cran delivers the walk-off single in the ninth inning
WACO, Texas – Baylor Softball walked off Kansas, 3-2, Friday night after nine innings of play at Getterman Stadium to open its conference slate.
THE RUNDOWN
Brooklyn Carter singled in the top of the first to try and get things going for the Bears, before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and an error but wasn't able to come home to score.
The Bears worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second before Leah Cran gave Baylor the 1-0 advantage in the bottom half of the inning with her first career home run.
In the next three innings, the Bears got two baserunners in each inning but weren't able to plate any more runs. Baylor limited the Jayhawks to just one base runner in the third and fourth innings before a play at the plate in the top of the fifth stopped KU from getting on the board.
After two Baylor errors in the sixth inning, Kansas took the 2-1 lead over the Bears, with both runs going unearned.
After Abi Flores singled and Amber Toven reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the third Ashlyn Wachtendorf moved them into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With two on the Jayhawks were able to stifle the Bears' threat and keep the 2-1 lead.
Down to its last chance in the bottom of the seventh, Shaylon Govan launched her fifth home run of the season over the scoreboard in left centerfield to tie the game, 2-2.
Reliever Lillie Walker shut Kansas down in the last four innings, retiring the last 10 Jayhawks to keep them off the board.
It was Leah Cran who delivered the game winning walk-off hit after Govan reached on a single and Turiya Coleman drew a walk. With two on and two out, Cran singled to right field, scoring Govan from second and securing the 3-2 win over the Jayhawks to begin conference play.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
Head coach Glenn Moore on the defense …
"Presleigh Pilon made a play I've never seen before that backhand flip to first base. We take that stuff for granted a little bit, but she and Amber up the middle are just as good as anybody in the country…. She works on the unorthodox parts of her game all the time and just didn't even blink an eye whenever she made that play. I'm over there thinking, 'I have never in my career seen that play made.' Inside backhand is the way I believe she flipped it to first base."
Leah Cran on her first career home run …
"It was great, I mean it was my first home run so obviously that was really fun, but I think it all started with the pre-game, just having a plan and our coaches and girls make sure those things happen."
Shaylon Govan on scoring the game winning run …
"I was thinking home regardless, I was head down if Coach Moore would've told me to stop, I was still going to go home so it didn't matter. I was like no we have to win this game now."
