Waco native returns to Central Texas after stints with the Owls and Wyoming Cowboys
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball signed its fifth transfer of the offseason, as former Rice big man Caden Powell signed with the Bears on Tuesday.
The McDonalds All-American nominee played his high school ball down the street at Midway High School, where he was an all-region honoree. Signing with Wyoming as a three-star prospect out of high school, he has 92 games of Division I experience under his belt across stints with the Cowboys and Owls. Head coach Scott Drew is obviously very familiar with Powell, and he's excited to welcome him back to Central Texas.
"Caden has done such a great job of representing Waco and Central Texas through the years, and we are excited to welcome him back," he said. "He is our first scholarship player from Waco in my 23 years here, so while his Baylor and Waco connections make him an obvious fit off the floor, his growth and maturation on the floor will make him an impact player for us moving forward."
Last season with the Owls, Powell was the only player to start all 32 games, averaging 10.4 points and a team-leading 7.2 rebounds per game. The former Super Centex first-teamer led Rice, shooting 56.5% from the floor, scoring in double figures 16 times to go along with five double-figure rebound games. He averaged a team-high 11.0 points in conference games and averaged the fifth-most offensive boards per game in the American Athletic Conference.
In two seasons with the Cowboys, Powell played in 47 games with 31 starts, scoring in double figures four times in 2023-24, while he also leading the team with 24 blocks. His high-water mark came with 17 points against St. Louis
