WACO, Texas – After playing seven matches without a blemish in its 2025 campaign, Baylor soccer recorded its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to Texas Tech in the Big 12 opener on Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
Both squads traded chances throughout the first half, with the Red Raiders holding a slight 6-5 shot advantage at the break. BU put three shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes that required saves from goalkeeper Faith Nguyen.
After halftime, Texas Tech outshot Baylor 13-5, with the breakthrough coming on a Peyton Parsons penalty kick to the right side of the net. The Red Raiders converted in the 72nd minute after a foul on the edge of the box.
Theresa McCullough nearly found the equalizer in the 86th minute, but Nguyen got a fingertip on the shot to deny her.
The lone caution of the night came in the 48th minute, when Texas Tech's Macy Blackburn was shown a yellow card for a foul on McCullough in front of the home stands.
For the Bears, Olivia Hess, Lauren Omholt, Tyler Isgrig and McCullough led with two shots apiece. McCullough put both of hers on frame, while Isgrig had one shot saved by Nguyen. Blythe Obar and Aryanna Jimison also registered a shot.

On today's match…
"I don't think we played a very good second half. We didn't stick to our identity, which is to be brave under pressure. We had chances and we needed our attackers to be more lethal in those moments … I thought we handled (the physicality) okay in the first half, but we let that take over in the second half … It's a hard lesson."
On bouncing back in Kansas next week…
"We have to go on the road and get points. We need points in conference, that's ultimately what's going to matter. Everybody in the conference is playing well right now, so it's going to be competitive and there's crazy results all across the league. So we got to get points out of this trip."
