BU seeking its first 4-0 start to Big 12 play since 2019
WACO, Texas – No. 15 Baylor Volleyball returns to action on Wednesday night, hosting Houston at 7 p.m. inside the Ferrell Center.
Meeting for the 41st time, the Bears will try to extend their winning streak to 10-straight matches against the Cougars after U of H won 30 of the first 31 between the programs.
On the heels of a 3-2 win over No. 9 TCU, Baylor looks to remain in the driver's seat in the Big 12 and get off to its best start to conference play since 2019.
Junior middle blocker Victoria Davis is coming off a 13 kill performance, where she hit .545 and tallied five blocks, becoming the first Bear with that stat line in a five-set match in over two years. She knows that 3-0 is a good place to start for this team, but it's something they want to continue building on, beginning Wednesday night.
"It really sets the tone for how we want to compete for the rest of conference play," Davis said. "We want to play hard and perform our best in every single match. Starting off this way has allowed us to build some momentum and just makes us want to strive to play at that level the rest of the way."
The Bears will look to continue their success against in-state foes, owning a 67-35 record against Texas programs in the Ryan McGuyre era, including a 36-9 mark against current Big 12 teams from the Lone Star State.
Boasting some of the Big 12's best, Baylor's Morgan Madison was named the Big 12's Rookie of the Week on Tuesday for the second time this season. The freshman led Baylor's defense last week with 37 digs across two matches for an average of 4.11 per set. She now leads all conference freshmen with 3.59 digs per set.
Florida Transfer Gabrielle Essix continues to be a steadying force in the middle of the Baylor block. Last week she tallied 15 total blocks, averaging 1.67 per set, including 10 blocks in the win at Texas Tech en route to her first double-double in nearly three years. Essix became the first Bear to have 10 blocks in a match since Kara McGhee had 10 in October 2022. The Big 12's co-leader in blocks per set (1.41) followed up her performance in Lubbock with five more rejections against TCU, holding the Red Raiders and Fogs to a collective .172 hitting percentage over the two matches.
Pete Sousa and Faith Lynch will have the call on ESPN+, beginning at 7 p.m. CT. Live stats are available at BaylorBears.com/stats.
