A&M honors Baylor’s Clyde Hart by renaming the 4x400m relays in his name
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Weather permitting, Baylor track and field will try to navigate the icy roads down Highway 6 to compete in this weekend's Ted Nelson Invitational at Texas A&M's Fasken Indoor Stadium.
This is actually Baylor's second trip to A&M after sending a few select athletes to the McFerrin 12-Degree Invitational last month.
In last week's full-squad indoor season opener, senior sprinter Tiriah Kelley raced to a world-leading time of 22.56 seconds in the 200 meters at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, earning Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week honors.
Another huge highlight for the Bears was freshman Landon Freeman becoming the program's first 7-foot high jumper in 26 years, finishing fifth with a career-best mark of 7 feet, 0 ½ inches. That also leaves Freeman just an inch and a half shy of Jeff Wylie's 36-year-old school record of 7-2.
"I'm looking forward to going down to A&M this weekend, if the weather permits," Baylor head coach Michael Ford said. "I thought the team did very well at Tech, so just want to try to gain some more momentum before we go to Kansas State next week (for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational)."
With the men's and women's weight throw being the only events on Friday, Baylor's athletes won't be competing until Saturday, when the field events start at 10 a.m. and running events at 12 p.m. with the 3,000 meters.
Kelley will drop down to the 60 meters for the Ted Nelson meet, along with 60-meter hurdler Demario Prince, who is making his indoor season debut. Junior pole vaulter Molly Haywood, a two-time outdoor All-American, is returning to the Fasken Indoor facility after a winning vault of 14-4 at the McFerrin Invitational.
Arguably, the highlight of the meet will be the men's and women's Clyde Hart 4x400-meter relay events. A&M head coach Pat Henry renamed the event to honor the legendary Baylor coach, who passed away in November.
"Just a huge honor," Ford said. "They definitely had their battles over many decades of running 4x400s together. So, for Coach Henry to honor Coach Hart in a special way, I'm definitely grateful for him and the A&M staff for doing that."
Baylor and the host A&M squad will be joined by Houston, North Texas, Rice, Texas State, Utah State, UTSA, East Texas A&M, New Mexico JC and Odessa JC.
The two-day meet will be streamed by SECN+, with live stats available at Flash Results.
