UConn transfer records his first top-10 finish at Baylor
BENTWOOD FINAL RESULTS
MONTGOMERY, Texas – The reigning Big East individual champion, Baylor junior transfer Alex Heard from UConn recorded his first top-10 finish as a Bear, closing with an even-par round of 72 on Tuesday and tying for ninth at 1-over 214 in the Bentwater Intercollegiate.
As a team, Baylor shot its best round of the tournament and moved up two more spots to tie for fifth in the 14-team tournament at 21-over 873. VCU and the host Sam Houston team shared the tournament title at 5-over 857.
"Overall, our team performance was not what we had in mind," interim head coach Ryan Murphy said, "and the game humbled us this week. It will be back to the drawing board to get ready for our next event."
Heard birdied his first and last holes of an up-and-down third round that included three birdies and three bogeys, tying for ninth in the 81-player field that also included individuals from TCU and Rice. He tied for third in par-3 scoring (3.00) and sixth in pars with 35.
"I'm happy with Alex's play this week," Murphy said. "He was consistent from start to finish, and it's always good to finish top 10 in a golf tournament. Alex is capable of winning, and I think his time is coming."
Playing in the team lineup for the first time since the season opener in the fall, Auburn transfer Evan Vo eagled the par-4 14th hole and closed with a 2-under-par 69 to tie for 22nd at 5-over 218.
"Happy with a couple solid rounds from Evan after not being in our lineup for some time," Murphy said. "He fought all the way through, which helped our team significantly."
Sophomore Vincent Stjernfeldt shot 1-over 72 on Tuesday and tied for 27th at 6-over 219, while junior Davis Ovard and senior Jonas Appel had matching rounds of 3-over 74 and tied for 42nd.
Making his collegiate debut this week, freshman Tyler Sanford survived a quadruple-bogey on the par-4 6th hole to shoot 5-over in the final round and tie for 27th with Stjernfeldt as one of three Baylor golfers playing as individuals. Sam Dossey and Patrick Babb both had their best round of the tournament at 2-over 73.
"That was a solid college start for Tyler to get a round in the red," Murphy said of Sanford's 1-under 70 in Monday's second round, "and also have himself in position to have a great finish with one round to play in a golf tournament. Good things to come for Tyler Sanford."
Next up for the Bears is a trip to Los Cabos, Mexico, for the Cabo Collegiate, which will be held March 1-3 at Twin Dolphin Club.
