UConn transfer Heard coming off top-10 finish at Bentwater Collegiate
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Pivoting from the Cabo Collegiate because of safety and travel concerns in Mexico, the Baylor men's golf team will play in Stetson University's Sam Ryder Intercollegiate that begins Monday at The Hills Course at LPGA International.
Baylor interim head coach Ryan Murphy said he reached out to Stetson coach Danny Forshey, and he "graciously allowed us to come and be a part of the event. I'm just grateful that we are going to have an event on the schedule."
Playing in just their second tournament since legendary coach Mike McGraw retired in January, the Bears finished fifth in last month's Bentwater Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Texas, shooting 2-over-par 286 in the closing round.
UConn transfer Alex Heard tied for ninth individually, shooting 1-over 214. Playing in the lineup for the first time since the season opener in the fall, Auburn transfer Evan Vo closed with a 2-under-par 69 and tied for 22nd at 5-over 218.
"Happy with a couple solid rounds from Evan after not being in our lineup for some time," Murphy said. "He fought all the way through, which helped our team significantly."
Heard, Jonas Appel and Vo head the lineup for this week's tournament and will be joined by Sam Dossey and Davis Ovard.
"We're going to go over there and go through our process that we go through," Murphy said, "and we're going there to compete, just as we would for any event. We're going to put our best foot forward and see what we can do."
Joining Baylor and Stetson in the 14-team tournament are UTEP, Florida Atlantic, Rhode Island, James Madison, Lipscomb, Campbell, Toledo, Central Arkansas, Appalachian State, Georgia State, North Dakota State and Columbia.
Baylor will be paired with Campbell, Lipscomb and Rhode Island for Monday's two rounds, with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. CT. Live scoring is available at Sam Ryder Intercollegiate.
