
No. 1 A&T Post Win over No. 2 Oregon

WACO, Texas -- The top-ranked Baylor acrobatics & tumbling team delivered an exciting victory over No. 2 Oregon, 278.050-272.530 on Saturday afternoon in front of 1,943 at the Ferrell Center.
The Bears (4-0) topped the Ducks (2-1) by 5.52 points. Entering the meet, Baylor held a 3.62 point advantage in start value. The win marked the 54th consecutive win for the Bears and have won 14 straight meetings with Oregon.
"The crowd felt much bigger than it actually was," Baylor Coach Felecia Mulkey said. "They were so loud. They were engaged the entire time. They really came in clutch for us at the end."
To start off the meet in Compulsory, BU and Oregon executed the necessary skills, each heat with a start value of 10. In the Acro heat, Oregon scored a 9.45, and Baylor followed with a 9.65. On the Pyramid heat, the Ducks scored a 9.90, outscoring the Bears 9.85. The Bears won the Toss heat with a 9.90, with Oregon scoring a 9.85. In the Tumbling heat, BU scored an 8.70, and the Ducks scored an 8.45. Through the first event, the score was 38.10 to Oregon's 37.65, with the Bears up by 0.45 points after winning three heats in Compulsory.
To start the optional portion of the meet in Acro, Baylor followed a 9.95/10 performance from Oregon with a 9.95/10. In the synchronized 6 Element heat, the Ducks scored 9.00/10 before Baylor, with four different pairs of tops and bases, scored 9.70/10. In the third heat, Oregon competed a 9.850/10 score, and Makayla Vasquez and Mo Arthur scored a 9.80/10. For the Acro event, BU scored 28.80 to Oregon's 29.45, bringing their total to 67.55 to 66.45 through two events, with Baylor leading by 1.10 points.
In the Pyramid event, Oregon started it off with a 9.95/10 score in the Inversion heat, which the Bears followed up with the same score of 9.95/10. Topping the Synchronized heat after the Ducks' 9.90/10 were Payton Washington and Bott, based by McDonald and Meredith Wells, respectively, who scored a 9.90/10. In the Open heat, Oregon scored a 9.80/10 while Baylor competed the 3-high slide to split pyramid. Bases Leavy McDonald and Mo Arthur held a three-high extended structure straddle position. Mid-level was Baylee Garnto, and top was Makayla Vasquez. Once the pyramid hit peak position, the two main bases, McDonald and Arthur, performed a slide to split, but the skill was not completed due to a fall, resulting in a score of 8.95/10. For the Pyramid event, Baylor scored a 28.80, while the Ducks scored 29.65.
To kick off the second half with the Toss event, it was Tannehill topping the 450 Salto heat, finishing with a score of 9.50/9.90 after Oregon scored a 9.60/9.90. In the Synchronized heat, the Ducks earned a 9.35/9.90, and for the Bears, Washington and Tannehill earned a 9.55/9.90. In the final heat, the Open heat, Oregon scored a 9.05/9.50 before Baylor followed with a 9.70/10 from Washington. At the end of the Toss event, Baylor totaled 28.75 while Oregon had a 28.00. Through four events, BU had a score of 125.10 while Oregon had a 124.10, and the Bears are up by 1.00 points.
In the Tumbling event, Oregon's duo scored an 8.95/10 while Emily Bott and Lawrence Owens competed for a score of 9.05/10. In the Trio, the Ducks put a score of 9.15/9.75 on the mat, followed by BU's 9.40/10 from Alyiah Thomas, Gigi Rendino, and Ashlyn Tannehill. In the Quad pass, Washington, Criado, Sarah Kerr, and Gabby Kaminski scored a 9.30/10, after Oregon posted an 8.60/9.55. For the Aerial pass, it was Bott who scored a 9.70/10 after the Ducks earned a 9.60/9.95. Competing in the 6 Element heat, Washington earned a 9.900/10, while Oregon earned a 9.725/10. Kerr earned a 9.800/10 for the Open heat, with the Ducks' 9.875/10.
Combined, Baylor scored 57.150 to finish the Tumbling event, while Oregon scored 55.900. After five events, BU led 182.250 to 180.000, up by 2.250 points headed into the last event. In the Team event, Oregon scored a 92.53/107.38 and Baylor followed with a 95.80/109.75. The meet was finalized, BU came out on top with a 278.050 score against Oregon's 272.530; the Bears winning by 5.520 points.
HIGHLIGHTS
● In the 7-element, The Bears begin with Makayla Vasquez as top in a straddle and Mo Arthur as base in a needle position. Then the base moves from a needle position into a two-hand handstand, where Arthur's foot leaves the ground with the straddle still on the other foot. In the second portion of the heat, the crowd saw the two-hand stacked handstand, where the base goes to one arm, which no one has ever competed in our sport, and no one's ever competed the needle.
● BU is on a 54-meet winning streak.
● The Bears start off the season 2-0 at home.
