Bears return to Waco for pair of Big 12 foes
WACO, Texas – No. 44 Baylor women's tennis continues its Big 12 gauntlet as it hosts Iowa State on Friday at noon before No. 63 Kansas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Admission to the Hurd Tennis Center is free all weekend with free white T-shirts available for fans on Friday, and fans' four-legged friends are welcomed to Sunday's match for Hounds at the Hurd.
Iowa State enters the weekend at 2-7 while searching for its first win in Big 12 play. Led by Stanislava Shulzhenko's 4-4 singles record and a pair of Cyclones with three doubles wins, Iowa State earned victories over UNLV and St. Thomas but fell to Colorado, Texas Tech and Kansas in conference action.
Mari Paz Alberto Vilar is the Cyclones' lone ranked player at No. 73 in singles.
Kansas comes to Texas at 6-6 and first faces TCU in Fort Worth on Friday before its match with the Bears.
The Jayhawks have defeated Colorado and Iowa State this season but opened Big 12 play with a 4-1 loss to Texas Tech. Kyoka Kubo sits at No. 45 in the singles rankings and teams with Heike Janse van Vuuren for the No. 53 doubles spot nationally.
Baylor is coming off a 2-0 road weekend after defeating Cincinnati 4-0 and West Virginia 5-2.
The Bears' Na Dong jumped 29 spots from No. 73 to No. 44 in the singles rankings, and Zuzanna Kubacha rose 10 spots to No. 100. Cincinnati and West Virginia do not field a ranked singles or doubles court.
The Cub Tennis Club will be at 12 p.m. on Sunday before the match against Arizona State starts. The Baylor Cub Tennis program is open to children ages 3-11 and provides participants an opportunity to learn basic tennis skills from Baylor student-athletes and staff. All equipment will be provided, but participants are encouraged to wear athletic apparel and tennis shoes.
