Armstrong swats seventh homer of the season in series-evening contest
The Bears (11-7, 1-1) were unable to find much momentum offensively outside of a two-run home run from redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong. WVU (12-4, 1-1) held BU to just two runs on three hits, while the Mountaineers racked up 13 runs on 17 hits on the day.
THE RUNDOWN
West Virginia got on the board right away with three runs on three hits and three walks in the top of the first. The Bears turned a nifty 5-4-3 double play to prevent further damage in the opening frame.
In the second, WVU kept rolling with five more hits and another three runs, extending its lead to 6-0. After a scoreless third, the Mountaineers tacked on one more in the fourth on an RBI fielder's choice.
BU chipped away at the deficit in the home half of the fourth as freshman outfielder Brady Janusek singled up the middle and later scored on Armstrong's two-run shot, his seventh of the year.
However, WVU got those runs right back with two in the top of the fifth to move the scoreline to 9-2. In the sixth, the visitors kept adding on with another three runs and held the Bears' bats quiet in the home half. West Virginia plated one more in the top of the seventh and retired the BU side in the bottom half to complete the run-rule victory.

Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On takeaways from today's game…
"We didn't kick it, we just didn't pitch it well enough. Our guys are out there trying. We've got to get a couple guys cleaned up, gotta keep working on figuring out how to get something out of a couple guys that are capable of helping us. But we were competing. Our at-bats weren't bad. Those guys are really good on Saturdays, his [WVU starter Chansen Cole] numbers are outstanding. And what you saw today was the value of starting pitching. Here we are, on a short leash because of our situation with our starters, trying out somebody that hasn't started yet. And, you know, tomorrow we'll run a starter out there and we'll hopefully get deeper into the game and have a shot to be in it and win it."
