Calder turns in quality start; Mountaineers score late to pull away and clinch series
WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball was held in check by No. 22 West Virginia, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
The Mountaineers (13-4, 2-1) used a dominant start by left-handed junior Maxx Yehl to keep the Bears' bats quiet, as Yehl toss eight scoreless and allowed just three hits while fanning 12. BU (11-8, 1-2) starter senior southpaw Ethan Calder nearly matched Yehl with 6.1 strong innings before turning it over to the bullpen.
WVU pulled away late after chasing Calder from the ballgame with four runs in the seventh and three runs in the ninth to take the deciding game of the weekend series.
THE RUNDOWN
Both offenses were held down by the southpaw starters early, as the two sides combined for just six hits through five innings of play. Calder faced the minimum through five, despite allowing a trio of hits that were quickly erased on the basepaths thanks to some nice glovework by the Bears' defense.
Calder was perfect the first time through the lineup, retiring the WVU side in order in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, Baylor threatened with back-to-back singles by fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson and redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders, but was unable to cash in on the run-scoring opportunity.
Despite Calder allowing a leadoff single to start the top of the fourth, the Mountaineer baserunner was promptly picked off at first base. Then next batter singled in to left field, but was thrown out trying to stretch the knock into a double. A foul pop out ended the frame and brought the Bears up to the dish in a scoreless ballgame. After BU went down 1-2-3, Calder erased yet another leadoff single with a 6-4-3 double play following a strikeout to end the top of the fifth.
With a runner on third and two away in the home half, Sanders came to the plate looking to drive in the game's first run. But, the Baylor leadoff man and one of the Big 12's leading hitters was ruled to have went around on a check swing, thus ending the offensive threat.
In the top of the sixth, West Virginia scored the game's first run on a solo home run, then followed it up with a four-spot in the top of the seventh to go ahead 5-0. A single and intentional walk chased Calder from the ballgame, but the BU bullpen was unable to limit damage as three more walks and a two-run double extended the WVU lead.
After a quiet eighth, the Mountaineers added on with another three runs, thanks to one hit, three walks and a BU error, pushing their lead to 8-0.
The Bears were unable to find an answer against Yehl and WVU reliever David Perez, who combined to strikeout 10 of the last 13 they faced following Sanders' fifth-inning strikeout.

On what positive takeaways there can be from this series…
"It's going to be a dogfight every week. That's what we have to understand, and our guys do. Our guys want to win, but it's not going to be easy. You're going to have to beat good people. You're going to have to make adjustments, and we're still learning how to do that. There is a lot of youth and you know, some inexperience out there, and we're going to have to get better and learn from it. It is what it is, our team is our team, and I love our team, but we are going to have to grow up. We had an opportunity to win a series, and so it's disappointing on our end. At the same time, you have to tip your hat to them."
