Castro shoots Bears’ only sub-par round in a difficult first day
LADY LUCK INVITATATIONAL DAY 1 RESULTS
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Unable to string together birdies or even pars on a consistent basis, the 19th-ranked Baylor women struggled to a 22-over 310 in Monday's morning round and came back with an 11-over-par 299 to sit in eighth place going into Tuesday's final round at the Lady Luck Invitational.
Big 12 rival and 16th-ranked UCF had the only sub-par round of the day, shooting 8-under 280 in the second round and holds the 36-hole lead at 8-over 584, four shots ahead of Kent State (12-over, 588). At 33-over 609, the Bears are just three shots behind Northern Arizona and Oklahoma State and 11 back of 49th-ranked Oregon State for a top-five spot.
Playing on the Las Vegas Country Club course that will host next year's Big 12 Championships, Baylor got an even-par 72 from senior Silje Ohma in the opening round and a 1-under 71 from sophomore Malena Castro in the afternoon for the only two highlights of the day.
Ohma slipped to 3-over 75 in the afternoon and fell out of the top 10, tying for 12th at 3-over 147, while Castro birdied four of her final eight holes and moved into the top 25 at 8-over 152.
Junior transfer Yurang Li survived a double-bogey on the par-4 fifth hole to shoot 3-over 75 and move up 12 spots to a tie for 44th at 12-over 156. Freshmen Amelia Wan and Paloma Ibarra Ambia had matching rounds of 78 in the afternoon and are tied for 40th and 56th, respectively.
The Bears will have to make up 11 shots on Oregon State to keep alive a string of eight-consecutive top-five finishes this season.
Baylor will be paired with Oklahoma State and UTSA in a final round that starts with a 10:30 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live scoring is available at Lady Lucky.
