Head coach Scott Drew earns 500th career win
WACO, Texas – Baylor men's basketball never took its foot off the gas to end the regular season with some momentum, dominating Utah 101-75 in Foster Pavilion on Saturday night. The win notched another milestone for head coach Scott Drew, who earned his 500th career win.
Coach Drew became one of 25 active DI head coaches with 500 career wins. At age 55, Drew is the third youngest among the 25 coaches, the only younger coaches being Bart Lundy (54) and Mick Cronin (54).
Baylor (16-15, 6-12 Big 12) shot 62-percent from the field to snag its largest margin of victory against a Big 12 team since 2023 versus Texas Tech. Despite the 26-point win, Utah (10-21, 2-16) still posted a 60.4 field goal percentage, including 50-percent from three.
Four Bears ended in double figures with Tounde Yessoufou (26), Cameron Carr (21), Michael Rataj (14) and Dan Skillings Jr. (10) leading for BU. On senior night, Rataj and Skillings found their way to double-digits as well as Caden Powell earning a career-high in assists with five and Obi Agbim ending with seven points on three assists.
THE RUNDOWN
Utah opened the scoring Saturday evening, but the Bears responded with a 6-0 run highlighted by a Cameron Carr layup and an Isaac Williams triple to take their first lead of the night. Baylor opened the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including three shots from beyond the arc, to build an early 16-9 advantage.
To extend the lead and keep their perfect start intact, Michael Rataj buried a three and Tounde Yessoufou scored in the paint to cap a 10-0 Baylor run. The surge was briefly halted, but Yessoufou answered from beyond the arc and Dan Skillings Jr. drove to the rim, pushing the Bears' advantage to 12.
The Bears continued their strong defensive performance, forcing a three-minute Utah scoring drought while staying hot on the other end, going 6-for-6 from the field during the stretch to build a 37-18 advantage, including 16 points off turnovers.
The Utes began to find a rhythm on offense, but Baylor's spark on the other end kept the margin intact. The Bears were firing on all cylinders in the first half, with every player in the rotation recording an assist and six of the seven contributing to the large first-half scoring total.
Heading into the half, Yessoufou led the early charge with 15 points to boost Baylor to a 53-33 advantage at the break.
Utah opened the scoring in the second half, but Caden Powell answered for the Bears to halt the momentum and get Baylor back on track, as BU started the half 5-for-7 from the field. Yessoufou stayed hot with a corner three, and Skillings Jr. continued to produce in the paint to push the margin to 68-44.
Obi Agbim found his rhythm from beyond the arc, knocking down his first two threes of the game. The Bears kept their foot on the gas as Yessoufou recorded his 12th 20-plus point game of the season, while Rataj reached double figures for the 10th time and Skillings Jr. tallied double digits for the 16th time this season.
Baylor entered the final three minutes with a 95-67 lead. James Nnaji came off the bench and finished at the rim, and Will Kuykendall made an impact with a drive to the basket to add two more. A pair of Nnaji free throws pushed the total to 101, marking Baylor's first 100-point Big 12 game since Jan. 27, 2024, against TCU.
The Bears closed out their dominant performance with a 101-75 victory over Utah.
