WACO, Texas – In his 23 seasons at Baylor, Scott Drew has had some memorable Senior Night games, but nothing like this.
On a night when the Bears honored first-year seniors Obi Agbim, Caden Powell, Michael Rataj and Dan Skillings Jr., Baylor dominated the Utah Utes, 101-75, Saturday at Foster Pavilion for Drew's 500th career win.
"I want to start out by thanking the Baylor administration for giving me the chance to be here, to get 500 wins, giving us the resources to compete," said Drew, who is 500-285 in 24 years as a head coach and 480-274 at Baylor.
"Thank the players that have come here and played for the name on the front of the jersey and sacrificed so much. And then, the staff that has done such a great job through the years. I know my family, any coach's family, sacrifices a lot with time, and they've allowed us to do what we need to be successful. The culture of JOY – joy, others yourself – is something special here. And it's a blessing to be a part of."
Baylor (16-15, 6-12), which has made 16 of the last 17 potential postseasons, continued its last-season run by winning three of its last five and earning the No. 13 seed for next week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
"The Baylor team we have now is the best version of us," said Skillings, who had 10 points and three steals. "I feel like the fans see us play hard to the whistle. I feel like if we had had ore time with this team, we would have more to show in conference play. But I'm happy to be here, and I'm happy to go to Kansas City and shock the world."
Freshman Tounde Yessoufou and sophomore Cameron Carr led the Bears with 26 and 21 points, respectively, while the four seniors combined for 39 points.
"The fact that these guys wanted to grow, wanted to learn, that was really exciting," Drew said of the seniors. "And then, they allowed us to coach them."
Skillings, a transfer from Cincinnati, said the locker room scene after the game was "amazing."
"We were all splashing water on (Coach Drew) . . . and everybody just kept on going," Skillings said. It was great to see Coach Drew that happy, the work that he puts in behind the scene. And just to celebrate him, because he's very humble and he's really team-oriented and doesn't really like talking about himself. It was fun to put a spotlight on him. And it's a great accomplishment, 500 wins."
Saying "this was not my first rodeo," Drew said he went on the offensive in the postgame celebration with two water bottles.
"Unfortunately, I only had two in my hand. After that, I was toast."
Drew is now one of 25 active Division I head coaches with at least 500 wins. He came to Baylor in 2003 after a decade at Valparaiso, including the final year as the head coach, and has led the Bears to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, three NIT berths and the 2021 national championship.
"500 wins is such a monumental achievement in college basketball," said Baylor Director of Athletics Doug McNamee. "And yet, with Scott Drew, it almost feels anticlimactic because of all the other accomplishments he has already filled his career with.
"Whether it be milestone victories, a national championship, NBA Draft picks or the wins in life off the court that he takes so much pride in orchestrating, Coach Drew is truly one of one. So thankful that we here at Baylor have a front-row seat to one of the greatest coaches college basketball has ever seen."
First-year Utah coach Alex Jensen said the success that Drew has had at Baylor is "something that I hope to and our program wants to replicate."
"Scott is one of the guys I've watched from afar, being my first year going through the Big 12," said Jensen, whose team is 10-21 overall and 2-16 in conference. "Congratulations to Scott. It's well-deserved, he's done a phenomenal job here."
The No. 13 seed, Baylor will face 12th-seeded Arizona State (16-15, 7-11) at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, with the winner advancing to face fifth-seeded and sixth-ranked Iowa State (25-6, 12-6) at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
