Bears fall to TCU 4-1 but bounce back with 4-0 win over UTRGV

WACO, Texas – No. 11 Baylor men's tennis wrapped up its regular season on Sunday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, splitting the day with a 4-1 loss to No. 4 TCU but responding with a 4-0 victory over UTRGV.

Baylor (21-8, 6-2) honored its four seniors of Alexandru Chiritia, Luc Koenig, Zsombor Velcz and Arman Zamani following the TCU match. The Bears finished the regular season with an impressive 15-2 record at home and captured 11 ranked wins on the season.

VERSUS TCU
The Bears and Horned Frogs stayed neck and neck during the doubles matches. Connor Van Schalkwyk and Luc Koenig started the winning for the Bears by beating Albert Pedrico and Cooper Woestendick 6-3 on Court 2. TCU responded by defeating Alexandru Chirita and Zsombor Velcz on Court 1 in a competitive 7-6(4) tiebreak.

Devin Badenhorst and Calvin Baierl didn't let Bears stay tied for long. They defeated their opponents on Court 3, with thrilling 7-6(5) score to snag the doubles points over TCU, the first time since 2024.

The Horned Frogs responded by taking the first set across all six courts. The singles play was competitive with four total sets going into tiebreakers, but TCU pulled through taking four points to clinch the match.

Oliver Bonding started the momentum for the Horned Frogs by defeating Chirita 6-0, 6-2. Louis Bowden fell to his opponent 6-2, 6-2, which gave TCU its first two points. After a close and competitive two sets, Koeing lost to Pedrico 7-6(2), 7-5 to bring TCU to three points.

The Bears did not go down easy, Badenhorst extended his match to three sets against No. 6 Duncan Chan. But TCU clinched its fourth point against Baylor when Van Schalkywk fell to Woestendick 7-6(3), 7-6(5).

VERSUS UTRGV
Baylor bounced back in emphatic fashion, sweeping the doubles point and three singles courts to earn a 4-0 win over UTRGV. Chirita and Velcz opened doubles with a 6-2 victory on Court 1, while Badenhorst and Koenig followed with a 6-1 win on Court 2 to secure the point. Court 3, featuring Blake Anderson and Arman Zamani, was left unfinished with Baylor leading 5-1.

In singles, No. 7 Badenhorst gave the Bears a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sam Whitehead on Court 1. Koenig added the third point after rallying past Santiago Serrano, 6-0, 7-6(3), and Baierl clinched the sweep with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory over Loic Young Kriegel on Court 4.

Chirita, Zamani and Drew Hedgecoe all held leads in unfinished matches when Baylor secured the victory.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Bears will be travelling to Orlando, Florida for the Big 12 Championship starting April 16 and continuing through April 18. Baylor earned the No. 3 seed and will face off against six-seed Utah at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday.
