Bear duo Velcz/Chirita defeat No. 1 ranked doubles duo
ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 11 Baylor men's tennis (22-9) fell to No. 3 TCU (20-5) with a 4-0 loss on Friday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships. This was the third time this season Baylor and TCU have faced each other.
Baylor managed to secure a victory at No. 1 doubles, where Zsombor Velcz and Alexandru Chirita handed the No. 1 ranked TCU duo their first loss of the season with a 6-3 win on Court One. However, TCU clinched the overall match by winning the doubles point and sweeping the singles matches that were completed.
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor dropped the doubles point to TCU after the Horned Frogs secured wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Bears first captured a victory at No. 1 doubles as Chirita and Velcz bested the nation's top-ranked pair, Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Duncan Chan, 6-3. However, TCU's Albert Pedrico and Cooper Woestendick defeated Luc Koenig and Connor Van Schalkwyk 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Oliver Bonding and Maximus Dussault overcame Devin Badenhorst and Calvin Baierl 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, TCU extended its lead with a victory at No. 2 singles, where No. 38 Rolland de Ravel defeated No. 44 Velcz in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. TCU added another point at No. 4 singles as Bonding won 6-4, 6-4 over Koenig. The Horned Frogs clinched the match at No. 6 singles when Roger Pascual secured a 6-3, 6-3 win against Louis Bowden.
The remaining singles matches were left unfinished. At No. 1 singles, Badenhorst, ranked No. 8, was leading TCU's No. 11 Chan 7-6(1), 4-2. Van Schalkwyk, ranked No. 50, was tied 6-3, 5-7, 0-1 with Woestendick at No. 3 singles. At No. 5 singles, Chirita had split the first two sets with Pedrico, trailing 2-6, 6-3, 0-1.
