Bears have been the runners-up at the last two conference tournaments at DAC
DALLAS – Finishing as the conference runner-up in each of its two previous trips to the Dallas Athletic Club, the 26th-ranked Baylor women's golf team is seeded fifth in a "wide-open" Big 12 Championship that begins Thursday.
"Every time I go up there, it feels a lot like Ridgewood Country Club, which is our home course here in Waco," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said. "The terrain itself feels very familiar to what we play on every day. It's going to feel a little more like home cooking than going to Arizona or Florida, which I believe will make my team feel comfortable."
Even the golf superintendent, Travis Moore, was previously the course superintendent at Ridgewood and Twin Rivers, the Bears' previous home course. Baylor finished second at the Big 12 Championship in 2018 and 2023, the last two times it was held at the DAC.
"The one difference is going to be the fact that the bent grass greens (at Dallas Athletic Club) have a tendency to be faster and feel a little faster than the Bermuda grass greens (at Ridgewood)," Goble said.
Baylor is coming off a runner-up finish at The "Mo" Morial in Bryan, Texas, where the Bears were edged by third-ranked Texas A&M by just three shots. Senior Bridget Boczar had a season-best tie for second, shooting 3-over 219, with junior transfer Charlotte Brook and sophomore Malena Castro also recording top-10 finishes.
UCF is the top seed and ranked 15th, followed by No. 21 Arizona State, 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 25 Iowa State, Baylor and 29th-ranked Arizona, the defending Big 12 champion. But 11 of the 14 teams are ranked in the top 50.
"I think it's wide open this year," Goble said. "There's a lot of great teams in the Big 12, and we've played against most of them, and I feel like we've had really good success. And we've had good success without our 'A' games. I think we've had good success against them where we've only had one or two players in the lineup play well and the others play okay.
"I've said this all year, if we have all five players in the lineup play well, I don't think anybody will beat us."
Baylor's lineup this week will have seniors Boczar and Silje Ohma at the top two spots, followed by Brook, Castro and junior transfer Yurang Li. Castro leads the Bears with a 72.03-stroke average and 10 top-10 finishes, with Ohma (72.76) and Li (72.93) both averaging under 73. Ohma had a top-10 finish and earned Big 12 all-tournament honors as a freshman at the DAC in 2023.
Paired with Iowa State and Arizona for Thursday's first round, the Bears will begin on the back nine with tee times starting at 8:20 a.m. Arizona is coached by Giovana Maymon, who was a freshman on Baylor's 2015 national runner-up team.
Live scoring for the three-day, 54-hole tournament is available at Big 12 Championship, while ESPN+ will provide coverage on the final day with John Liddle and Lauren Withrow calling the action.
