BIG 12 FINAL RESULTS
DALLAS – On a challenging day "with potentially the toughest pins of the week," Baylor women's golf shot its best round of the tournament and tied for the third-best of the day in finishing seventh overall at the Big 12 Championship at Dallas Athletic Club.
Buoyed by a 1-under 71 from Illinois transfer Yurang Li, the Bears shot 5-over 293 as the 54-hole tournament wrapped up on Saturday. Baylor moved up a spot in the final round and shot 20-over 884, one stroke behind Texas Tech and 10 shots out of a top-five finish.
"It was a lot better day today," Baylor head coach Jay Goble said, "and it was nice to see the team perform on another day with potentially the toughest pins of the week. It was also nice to see us get revenge on hole No. 16, where we had two eagles today. I assume it was the only two eagles in the field."
Li and senior Silje Ohma both eagled the par-5, 509-yard 16th hole, which proved to be the sixth-toughest on the course with a 5.19-stroke average and 53 scores of bogey or worse. Colorado's Maya McVey recorded the only other eagle in the tournament when she holed out on the par-4 fourth hole in Thursday's opening round.
"I think the biggest challenge for the week was that we were stuck in first gear the whole time and never got any momentum on the green or during any of the rounds," Goble said. "On a positive note, I think that it was good for us to see things we need to work on and prepare for for regionals at our home golf course in two weeks."
Iowa State was the only team in the field to finish under par, shooting 7-under 281 in Wednesday's final round and 5-under 859 for the tournament to beat runner-up Houston by six shots. No. 15 UCF was third at 6-over 870, with Oklahoma State and Arizona State tying for fourth at 10-over 874.
Senior Bridget Boczar led the Bears, finishing tied for 16th at 3-over 219 after a closing round of 75, while Li and sophomore Malena Castro tied for 24th at 5-over 221. Ohma shot even-par 72 and tied for 31st at 6-over 222, with freshman Amelia Wan shooting 3-over 75 after subbing in for the final two rounds.
The NCAA selections will be announced at 3 p.m. Wednesday, but Baylor has already been selected as one of the six host sites and will hold the regional on May 11-13 at Ridgewood Country Club in Waco.
