NORMAN, Okla. - Jace Brewer smacked two solo home runs to lift the Baylor baseball team to a 6-3 win at Oklahoma Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improve to 20-8 overall, 7-4 in conference play while the Sooners fall to 15-12 overall, 4-4 in the league.
Baylor right-hander Kyle Evans (6-0) earned the win. The junior pitched seven innings, and gave up three runs on three hits while striking out six batters. Freshman Zane Carlson relieved Evans in the eighth, giving up two hits and walking one for his sixth save. Oklahoma starter Austin Coose was charged with the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits in eight innings. Coose managed to strike out just three Baylor hitters.
The Bears got on the board in the first inning, when Ross Bennett walked and was later driven in when Mike Huggins singled to left field. In the second, Tim Hartshorn doubled to left field and Anthony Hensley walked to put runners at first and second. Both runners stole bases to set up a two-run single by Ross Bennett and put Baylor up 3-0.
Brewer, a Washington, Okla., native, had an outstanding homecoming, smacking solo home runs to left field in the fifth inning and in the eighth.
The victory was Baylor head coach Steve Smith's 200th career win. All of those wins have come at Baylor.
Baylor and Oklahoma play the final game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
