WACO, Texas - Playing in its final home game of the season Sunday afternoon, the Baylor soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style. Each of Baylor's two seniors scored her first goal of the year in the game, and a pair of freshmen each knocked home two goals to lead a 7-0 rout over Texas Tech.
The seven goals by Baylor (8-6, 4-4 Big 12) set a team record for most scores in a conference game and were the most for Baylor in one match since Aug. 31, 1997, when Baylor beat Alabama-Birmingham 8-1. Texas Tech (4-12, 0-7 Big 12) lost its 13th straight conference game, dating back to the 2000 season.
"This was the perfect type of game for the seniors to have in their last home game," Baylor head coach Nick Cowell said. "From a sentimental view, it was nice that both seniors got to score."
Sophomore Whitney Barrett got the scoring going for Baylor just 4:30 into the game when she connected on her second goal of the year, assisted by Candace Reilly.
Later in the first half, senior defender Rachel Kacsmaryk recorded her first goal of the season, an unassisted shot from along the baseline to the right of the goal that hooked around Tech goalkeeper Brittany Peese and into the net on the far left side.
Freshmen Ginny Rosario-Tull and April Robertson each contributed first-half goals as the Bears took a 4-0 lead into the half. Rosario-Tull opened the second period scoring at the 62:10 mark with her sixth goal of the season and second goal of the day, assisted by Barrett.
Nineteen minutes later, senior midfielder Alyson Miles joined Kacsmaryk in scoring her first goal of the season. After two Baylor shots in front of the goal were blocked by Tech defenders, Miles settled the third rebound and put it into the net to give Baylor a 6-0 lead.
Robertson completed the scoring less than two minutes after Miles' score, when the freshman headed in sophomore Casey Cleveland's corner kick for Baylor's seventh goal of the day.
"[The scoring power] has a lot to do with teamwork," Robertson said. "We're working together better, and that helps our offense."
"It's about pride, too," Rosario-Tull added. "After we lost 6-0 to Texas A&M, we thought, 'We don't want to do that again.'"
The multi-goal games by Rosario-Tull and Robertson made them just the fourth and fifth players, respectively, in Baylor history to have more than one multiple-goal game in a career, joining Courtney Saunders, Molly Cameron and Nikki Hales in a rather exclusive club.
Other individual highlights Sunday included sophomore keeper Stephanie Dempsey recording her first career shutout and sophomore midfielder Ryan Lee notching two assists for the second time this season.
The previous school record for goals in a conference game was five, a total reached three times prior to Sunday (twice against Texas Tech, once against Missouri). On Sunday, the Bears set new season highs for goals (7), assists (5) and shots (30).
The four-game winning streak matches the team's high a year ago, Baylor will look to equal the team record of six straight wins as they wrap up Big 12 play next weekend on the road at Missouri (7 p.m. Friday) and at Kansas (1 p.m. Sunday).
