THE LADY BEARS...
After moving up three spots last week, Baylor remained at No. 9 in the Associated Press Poll this week. The Lady Bears started the season ranked No. 14. They jumped two spots to No. 11 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll.
Nine games into the season the Lady Bears are led by seniors Sheila Lambert (Seattle, Wash./Chief Sealth HS), Danielle Crockrom (Houston/North Shore HS) and freshman Steffanie Blackmon (Dallas/Rowlett HS). Lambert leads the way with 17.6 points per game, while Crockrom averages 16.6 and Blackmon manages 9.4 a contest. Crockrom hasn't lost a beat from last season when she averaged a double-double for the season. She has hauled down an average of 10.7 rebounds a game in nine games. Sophomore Chanelle Fox (Houston/Westfield HS) follows at 5.7 boards a contest and Blackmon averages 5.4.
MORE BALANCE AND DEPTH...
After relying mainly on Shelia Lambert and Danielle Crockrom last season (they accounted for 56 percent of last season's points) the Lady Bears now have more balance and depth to their roster. Several returnees gained valuable experience last season and have shown marked improvement, resulting in more playing time and production this season. Also, the freshmen, especially Steffanie Blackmon, Kelly Sords and Jordan Davis, have seen considerable floor time with favorable results. In fact, those three freshmen are averaging around 15 minutes a game.
BUSY TWO WEEKS...
In the space of 14 days the Lady Bears have played six games, including three road games, and remarkably, won all six. They hosted Denver on Nov. 25 and Sam Houston State on Nov. 27 then traveled to Oral Roberts for a Nov. 30 date. Next they hosted Boston University on Dec. 2 before heading to Honolulu for games on Dec. 7 & 8.
SELLOUT 2002...
The Sellout 2002 campaign is an effort to fill the Ferrell Center for the men's Big 12 opener against Iowa State Jan. 5, and the women's Jan. 12 contest vs. Oklahoma. Oklahoma's women have won back-to-back Big 12 championships as have Iowa State's men's team. Both games will be televised live on FOX Sports Net Southwest.
THE OPPOSITION...
UCLA
The UCLA Bruins come into the contest on a three-game losing streak. They have suffered losses to Michigan State (67-63), Utah (89-42), San Diego (79-51) and Colorado (79-48). Their three victories have come over Liberty (62-55), Ohio State (64-60) and BYU (73-62). Their top player, Michele Greco, sat out the last two games and has just been declared out for the season for medical reasons. Greco had been averaging 23.6 points and 5.0 rebounds a game for the Bruins. Senior Malika Leatham, a 6-2 center out of Houston (Hastings HS/Blinn JC), leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 10.6 points and 7.6 rebounds a game. Two players from other sports recently joined the squad. Soccer standout Whitney Jones played in her first game of the season against San Diego and Texas native Kristee Porter (Tyler/John Tyler HS) , a volleyball and track star, saw her first basketball action of the season against Colorado.

UCLA's Kathy Olivier is in her ninth season at UCLA and ninth season as a head coach. The UNLV graduate is 124-112 as a head coach.
