SAN JUAN - Baylor's inside game proved too much for the Eastern Michigan Eagles as the Lady Bears posted an 85-70 victory in second day's action of the San Juan Shootout on Saturday, Dec. 21. The win raises Baylor record to 9-1 while the Eagles fall to 5-3.
The Lady Bears, led by Sophia Young's 19 points and eight rebounds, scored 52 of their 85 points in the paint and Baylor won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Eagles 47-40. Joining Young in double figures in scoring for the night were Jessika Stratton with a season-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Emily Niemann and Steffanie Blackmon with 10 apiece. Blackmon tied Young for the team lead in rebounding with eight boards. Sophomore Chameka Scott had her second straight impressive game, contributing 9 points, 6 rebounds and a career-high 5 steals in 22 minutes of action.
The Lady Bears got off to a rocky start by quickly amassing 10 team fouls with 10 minutes left to go in the first half putting Eastern Michigan at the foul line for two shots with each successive foul. Luckily for the Lady Bears, the Eagles were just 9-of-17 from the line in the first half. Baylor took a 39-25 lead into the lockerrom at halftime. Stratton and Young combined for 22 of Baylor's 35 first half points with Young pouring in 13 and Stratton hitting three 3-pointers.
After coming out in the second half the Lady Bears extended their lead to 20 points at the 16:02 mark on a jumper in the paint by Scott. After that, Eastern Michigan came charging back and outscored the Lady Bears 18-6 over the next 4:30. Baylor countered with a 29-12 run over the next 9:30 before ending the game with a 15 point victory.
Baylor will now face North Carolina State on Monday, Dec. 22 at 3 p.m. (CST). Both teams are 2-0 in the tournament. In the first game of the day North Carolina State posted a 94-24 victory over UPR-Mayaguez.
