ST. CROIX, Virgin Islands -
The Baylor women's golf team fired a 306 to trail first-place SMU by 10 strokes, but the Bears hold a comfortable 10-stroke cushion of their own in second place after the first round of the St. Croix Collegiate Classic hosted by Xavier at the 6,701-yard, par-70 Carambola Golf Club.
Senior Michaelyn Morgan had one of her best showings in recent weeks and fired a four-over par 74 to stand alone in third place, one stroke behind the leaders, Missy Ryan and Kristina Rothengatte of SMU, who each shot 73. Three others are tied for fourth at 75.
Sophomore Josefin Svenningsson is tied for seventh with a 76, while sophomore Meredith Jones is tied for 12th at 77. Freshman Anna Rehnholm shot a 79 and is tied for 22nd, and senior Kelli McKandless is 45th with an 84.
SMU shot 296 as a team to lead Baylor by 10, while Notre Dame shot a 316 to trail Baylor by 10. Texas Tech is fourth at 317, and Illinois State rounds out the top 5 at 318.
The second round begins Saturday at 7 a.m. EST.
