Sophia Young a Honda Award Finalist

WACO, Texas - The Collegiate Women Sports Awards announce the finalists for the 2005-2006 Honda Sports Award for basketball today. Baylor's Sophia Young is one of four student-athletes to be selected as one of the the finalists for the award. The winner will be decided by nationwide voting among NCAA member schools and will receive the 2005-2006 Honda Award for basketball and become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.

2005-2006 Honda Sports Award Basketball Finalists include:

Sophia Young-Baylor University

Young, a native of St. Vincent in the Grenadines, completed her career after leading the Lady Bears to three straight NCAA Sweet 16s and the 2005 NCAA national championship. She recently became Baylor's first two-time Kodak/WBCA All-American and the school's first AP All-American. The 6-1 forward set four Big 12 career records this season becoming the league's all-time leader in scoring (2,480), rebounding (1,316), double-doubles (61) and rebounding average (9.5). In addition, she is one of only four players who have tallied 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 steals and 300 assists in their NCAA Division I careers. The elite group includes Cheryl Miller (USC), Chamique Holdsclaw and Tamicha Catchings (Tennessee). Young finished her career with 2,480 points, 1,316 rebounds, 315 steals and 303 assists.

In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university. The winner's program will receive $5,000.
