Where Are They Now?

Women's Basketball 7/8/2008 12:00:00 AM

July 8, 2008

Baylor women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey was watching television late last week, catching up on the WNBA.

Watching footage from easily the night's most thrilling finish, Mulkey was taken aback with what she saw.

She had seen the slender frame before. She had seen the silky-smooth moves and athleticism, too. But there was something different.

Sophia Young, who helped lead Baylor to the 2005 national title, made the free throw to secure the Silver Stars' 68-67 win against Sacramento on July 3.

"I texted her and said, 'I can remember the day when I took you off the floor because I didn't want anyone to foul you,'" Mulkey said, referring to Young's past free-throw woes. "To see her make free throws and develop her game ..."

It was a light moment between a former coach and pupil, but more so, it indicated Young's fast rise in basketball.

Despite not playing the sport until she was 15, the 6-foot-1 forward has emerged as one of the WNBA's brightest stars.
