WACO, Texas- Baylor men's tennis was successful in singles play at the HEB Invitational Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center. Competing in the A draw, all six singles players were triumphant in first round play. Second round play saw the advancement of three players to the round of 16.
Tennis action started at 8 a.m. as doubles teams took the courts. In the A draw round of 32, all three of Baylor's tandems fell. Fresno State's Rudy Siwy and Mirko Zapletal defeated Julian Bley and Dominik Mueller 8-3. Rice's Isamu Tachibana and Chnag Wang downed Marc Bruche and Denes Lukacs 8-6. Arkansas's Matt Hogan and Blake Strode upset fourth-seeded Attila Bucko and Jordan Rux 8-6.
In singles action, second-seeded Lukacs defeated Texas Tech's Michael Breler 7-6 (6), 6-3, Rux beat Tulsa's Albert Jou 6-2, 6-0, Bucko was victorious over Texas A&M-CC's Mike Pavlov 6-3, 6-4, Bruche downed Texas A&M-CC's Jose Zunio 6-4, 6-3, Bley triumphed over Oklahoma State's Anton Bobytskyi 6-4, 6-3, and Mueller dominated Arkansas's Chris Nott 6-3, 6-1.
Second round matches saw Rux and Bucko upset seeded players. Rux knocked out 12th-seeded Rudy Siwy of Fresno State in straight sets while Bucko lost his first set but came back to win the next two to beat 11th-seeded Olivier Sajous of Texas. Also coming out of the second round victoriously was second-seeded Luckas with his defeat of Texas A&M-CC's Dimtry Novikov.
"I'm pleased with the way we competed and fought in our singles matches today. Attila and Jordan both had wins over caliber players while Denes showed maturity in working through two matches in straight sets. Dominik, Julian, and Marc all lost to strong opponents who played well," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Our doubles were a little flat early this morning. We have some work to do there. I'm confident we'll develop over the course of the year. There was some terrific tennis on our courts today. We all learned a great deal. Tomorrow should be another exciting day of tennis."
Top-seeded singles players who found success on the courts today include first-seeded Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, third-seeded Arnan Brugues of Tulsa, fourth-seeded Bruno Rosa of Rice, and fifth-seeded Conor Pollock of Texas A&M. First-seeded doubles team Austin Krajicek and Conor Pollock of Texas A&M were defeated in the round of 16 and second-seeded Nathan Brynes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State were upset in the first round. Third-seeded Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavljevic advance to the quarterfinals.
