Men's Tennis' Lukacs Rolls To Sherwood Final

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.- It did not take senior Denes Lukacs long to return to last spring's form after not playing any fall matches for Baylor as he took down two more opponents Saturday to advance to the finals of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup.
The Eger, Hungary native moved his record to 4-0 in spring play and will play 54th-ranked Brady Klahn of Stanford at 10 a.m. (PT) on Sunday in the title match. Lukacs started the day by dispatching of Jaak Poldma of USC 6-3, 6-4. He followed that victory with a three-set triumph over No. 37 Alex Clayton of Stanford. Lukacs dropped the first set 6-0, but rebounded to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
"Denes fought really hard and showed a lot of maturity especially in his second match," assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "Clayton played really well in the first set, but Denes did not panic. He did a great job staying calm, staying within himself and figuring out a way to come out on top. I thought it was a really good win against Clayton, who is one of the most talented guys in the country, which should give him confidence going into the finals tomorrow."
If Lukacs wins tomorrow he will join Lars Poerschke in 2008 and Matija Zgaga in 2006 as Baylor players to win the singles title at Sherwood. Baylor's doubles' duo of Jordan Rux and Attila Bucko, who had advanced to the quarterfinals with a win yesterday were knocked out of the draw by losing to Daniel Nguyen and Jason McNaughton of USC 8-3.
Dominik Mueller and Attila Bucko both rebounded from losses yesterday by winning two consolation matches Saturday to advance to play each other in the finals of the consolation bracket on Sunday. Mueller first beat Greg Hirshman of Stanford 6-2, 6-3 and then took out Walker Kehrer of Stanford 6-4, 6-2. Bucko started with a victory over Daniel Gliner of UCS 6-3, 6-4 and then a three-set win over Denis Lin of Stanford 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
