WACO, Texas (AP) - Brittney Griner had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead second-ranked Baylor past outmanned St. Edward's University, 89-46, Monday night in its exhibition opener.

Ashley Field added 14 points and Brooklyn Pope had nine points and 15 rebounds for the Lady Bears, tuning up for a rematch with top-ranked Connecticut in Hartford on Nov. 16 after losing to the Huskies last year in the national semifinals.

"The good thing is we won," head coach Kim Mulkey said. "The other good thing is everyone got to play enough minutes to get up and down the floor. I thought Brittney came ready to play."

Kendra Field and Stephanie Dekkers led the Division II Hilltoppers with eight points each.

Griner, a 6-8 sophomore all-American who last year set the NCAA single-season record for blocked shots with 223, had four blocks against St. Edward's, who scored only 10 points in the paint and took almost half of their 51 shots from outside the 3-point arc.

"I knew I had to come out and try to grab the rebounds," Griner said. "It was one thing that coach stressed to me, but I guess I didn't have as many jitters as I did last time. I came out ready and I just played my game."

Griner scored 12 points in the opening 10 minutes and led a defense that held the Hilltoppers without a field goal for almost eight minutes as Baylor ran out to a 32-10 lead. She teamed with Pope for 17 first-half rebounds as the Lady Bears dominated the boards, 33-12, en route to a 43-18 lead at the break.

The Lady Bears will finish up exhibition play on Friday, Nov. 5 as they host Texas A&M-International at 7:00 p.m.
