Alamo Invitational Results

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Behind the play of Hayley Davis and Valerie Sternebeck, the 23rd-ranked Baylor womens' golf team is tied for third Sunday after the first round of the Alamo Invitational.

The Lady Bears shot a first-round 293 and are five strokes behind first-round leader TCU (288) and three strokes behind second-place Kentucky (290).

"I think we did okay in the first round," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "For the third straight round, we got off to a rocky start and there were times where we struggled. But, we kept our composure and settled down."

Through 18 holes, Davis is third overall at 2-under 70, one stroke behind first-round co-leaders Fabiola Arriaga (UTSA) and Monifa Sealy (UCF), who both shot 3-under 69. Davis, rated No. 29 nationally by Golfstat, opened the first round with two bogeys on the first three holes. She would settle down, posting four birdies on the ensuing four holes and would later add a birdie to open the back nine. A bogey on No. 17 dropped Davis to 2-under for the day.

Sternebeck is tied for ninth after shooting an opening-round even-par 72. Fellow senior Chelsey Cothran shot 3-over 75 and is tied for 30th, while freshman Chelsey Cothran is tied for 41st at 4-over 76. Senior Jaclyn Jansen, who won a share of the Price's "Give `Em Five" Intercollegiate individual title earlier this month, is tied for 60th at 7-over 79.

"I'm very proud of our team's resilience," Goble said. "On the other hand, I would love to see us to start well for once and I think that's coming Monday."
