LAWRENCE, Kan.- After coming from behind to win the first set, Baylor's volleyball team couldn't slow down the Kansas attack in a 3-1 loss (26-24, 23-25, 18-25, 9-25) in its regular season finale on Saturday night in Lawrence, Kan.
Baylor (18-14, 5-11) was down by as many as five points in the first set, coming back to win 26-24. But, the Jayhawks (15-14, 3-13) seemingly got stronger on both sides of the ball throughout the match, holding Baylor to single digits in the match-clinching fourth set. The nine points for Baylor in the set marks the first time since the 25-point, rally-scoring era started in 2008 that the Bears have failed to score double digits.
Baylor senior Briana Tolbert led the way with a team-best 12 kills in the match, while sophomore Zoe Adom and freshman Adri Nora each added nine. Junior Kate Harris recorded 34 assists, but Baylor hit just .158 with 41 kills as a team. Comparatively, the Jayhawks came away with a .256 hitting percentage and 65 kills.
On defense, Baylor got a standout performance from senior libero Allison King, who recorded a team-best 21 digs, marking her 30th match in a row with at least double digits.
For Kansas, four players recorded at least 10 kills, led by 17 from Allison Mayfield and 14 from Tayler Tolefree. KU libero Brianne Riley had a match-high 28 digs.
In the first set, Baylor got two kills from Nora to put on a 4-0 run for a short-lived 6-4 lead. KU scored the next seven in a row, but Baylor responded with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 13-13. During the span, Baylor got two more kills from Nora and a service ace from Torri Campbell. Baylor took a two-point lead at 18-16 after two KU errors, but the teams then traded one-point leads the rest of the way. Baylor had the first set-point at 24-23, but KU got a kill. The Bears then answered with a kill by Campbell, followed by another KU error for the 26-24 win.
Baylor took its first lead of the second set a 11-10 after a 4-0 run featured three KU errors. The Jayhawks retook the lead, but Baylor added a 5-2 run to take a 19-17 lead with two service aces from Allison King. Kansas then fought its way back into the lead, getting set-point at 24-22. Qian Zhang put away a kill to make it 24-23, but KU added kill from setter Nicole Tate for the 25-23 win.
The Bears then held the lead only once in the next two sets, with Kansas putting on a 10-4 run to finish off set three 25-18 and a 12-4 run win the fourth set 25-9.
Baylor finishes the regular season in seventh place in the Big 12 standings and will await its fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 5 p.m. CT on ESPNU. Baylor will host a watch party open to the public in the Stone Room inside the Ferrell Center beginning at 4:30 p.m. Check BaylorBears.com for more information on Sunday.
