COLUMBIA, Mo.- Despite four players with at least 10 kills, Baylor's late rally fell short in a 3-1 loss (22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-27) to Missouri on Saturday at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo.
Baylor racked up more kills, a higher hitting percentage and more digs, but the Tigers turned the tables with seven service aces to Baylor's two and 11.0 total blocks. The Bears hit .255 for the day with 64 kills, while Missouri was at .241 with 56 kills.
After Missouri took a 2-1 lead with a 25-20 win in the third set, Baylor erased a five-point deficit in the fourth set to get to set point at 24-23. The Tigers went on to take advantage of a Baylor reception error and service error to close out the pivotal match with a 27-25 win in the fourth.
Offensively, Baylor's strong attack was led by freshman right-side hitter Adri Nora, who notched a team-high 15 kills with a .314 hitting percentage. Senior Briana Tolbert and sophomore Zoe Adom each had 14 kills, while Torri Campbell had 12. Junior setter Kate Harris racked up 55 assists, marking her third consecutive match with at least 50.
Missouri's Lisa Henning and Emily Wilson led the Tiger offense with big numbers. Henning racked up 24 kills, while Wilson added 13.
On defense, senior libero Allison King led the way with a match-high 27 digs, while Qian Zhang added 12 and Harris notched her ninth double-double with 10.
In the first set, Missouri got out to a 9-6 lead, but Adom found a hot streak that started with a block assist and finished with three consecutive kills of her own to give BU a 10-9 lead. After Zhang tied the score back at 16-16, the Tigers went on a 7-2 run to make it 23-18. Adom added two more kills, but Missouri held on for a 25-22 win.
The second set was all Baylor from the start, as the Bears cruised out to a 5-0 lead getting three kills and two MU errors. BU added another 5-0 run to push the score to 12-4 with two kills from Nora. The Bears kept adding on with back-to-back kills from Adom, followed by a Campbell kill to grow the lead to 20-11. A Tolbert kill and a MU attack error finished the set for Baylor, 25-17.
The third set stayed within one point until Missouri broke a 10-10 tie with five in a row, but the Bears answered with four in a row, book-ended by Nora kills. The Tigers came right back with another 4-1 run to open up a 20-16 advantage that they held to a 25-20 win.
Baylor got off to a slow start in the fifth set, facing an 8-3 deficit before the offense got rolling. The Bears went on to score 12 of the next 16 to take a 15-12 advantage, led by four blocks and back-to-back kills from Campbell. Missouri answered back with a 5-0 run and took a 20-17 lead. Tolbert then contributed two kills around a Nora kill to put BU back in the lead at 22-21. Another flip-flop of the lead had Missouri up 23-22, then BU at set-point at 24-23. Henning then put away one of her 24 kills to tie it, and after Baylor's two miscues, Henning finished it off with a kill, 27-25.
Baylor will be back at home on Wednesday, hosting Texas A&M at 7 p.m. at the Ferrell Center. The Bears will be looking to avoid a season sweep against the Aggies after losing in five sets in College Station, Texas, earlier this season.
