WACO, Texas - Max Garner turned in the longest outing of his career and posted a career-high nine strikeouts as Baylor completed a three-game sweep of Texas Tech with an 8-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

"They're a good fastball hitting team, and (Garner) just threw a lot of breaking balls for strikes," head coach Steve Smith said. "After watching them for two days, that's what we felt like, and we knew he'd have a chance if he were the Max we've seen. I don't have any doubts about him having ability to do it, he just hadn't been effective as a starter like he had been as a reliever, but today was another story."

Baylor had two timely extra-base hits that combined to drive in five of the eight runs, and Garner got some help from his bullpen to escape a jam in the seventh inning. Austin Stone, Crayton Bare and Miles Landry combined on 2.2 innings of shutout relief.

The Bears jumped on Texas Tech starter Shane Broyles (2-1) for four runs in the third inning. Logan Vick drove in two with a bases-loaded double to the wall in right field, and Cal Towey scored after Reid Redman dropped the ball while applying a tag on Towey, who was running home on Josh Ludy's grounder to third. Vick scored on a wild pitch to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.

Vick had his third straight multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, one walk, two runs and two RBI. He leads the Big 12 with 11 doubles, five of which have come while he's doubled in each of the last four games. Max Muncy also had two hits for the Bears, and Nathan Orf tied a school record for the second time this season by being hit by three pitches.

Broyles took the loss with four runs allowed on four hits in 2.2 innings. Reliever Trey Masek, who had allowed only one earned run in 13.0 innings entering the game, gave up four runs on three hits in 4.0 innings of relief.

Garner (2-2) struck out the side in order in the second inning and had a new career-high with six strikeouts through just three innings. He picked up the win by allowing only an unearned run on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Garner threw 65 of his 96 pitches for strikes and eclipsed his previous high pitch count of 82 pitches before running into trouble with one out in the seventh.

With Baylor holding a 4-0 lead, Texas Tech took advantage of an error and two singles to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh. With two on and one out, Stone got a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch to Jamodrick McGruder to record the second out of the inning.

Tim Proudfoot's RBI single got Tech on the board, but Bare came out of the bullpen and struck out Barrett Barnes to escape the inning. Proudfoot had the Red Raiders' only multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 with Tech's only RBI.

The Bears put the game away with another four-run outburst in the bottom half of the seventh. Baylor loaded the bases when three out of four batters were hit by a pitch. Towey scored on a wild pitch, Michael Howard then walked to load the bases again, and Jake Miller delivered a two-out, bases-clearing triple over McGruder's head in right field to give Baylor an 8-1 lead.

Bare worked around a walk in the eighth inning, and Landry pitched around a walk in a scoreless ninth with the help of a game-ending highlight-reel catch from Grayson Porter in left field.

Baylor completed its first Big 12 series sweep since taking all three in the final Big 12 series of the 2010 season against Oklahoma State, and BU improved to 20-3 in series finales when playing for a Big 12 home series sweep.

The Bears return to action when they travel to Sam Houston State for a 6:30 p.m. game Tuesday before returning to Baylor Ballpark to host a three-game series against Kansas starting Friday at 6:35 p.m. Friday's game is the first of two Dogtopia Bark in the Park games.
