Big 12 Women's Golf Championship Results

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Baylor freshman Hayley Davis is tied for the lead and the 18th-ranked women's golf team is in second after the first round Friday of the 2012 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship.

Davis, rated No. 25 nationally by Golfstat, owns a share of a one-stroke lead with Iowa State's Sasikarn On-Iam and Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil. Davis, On-Iam and Jao-Javanil shot 5-over 75 during Friday's first round, which was plagued by two weather delays and gusting winds of nearly 50 miles per hour. Sitting at 6-over after 12 holes, Davis managed to shoot for par over the next five holes before a birdie on No. 9 to end the day with a 75.

No. 18 Baylor finished the first day with a team tally of 33-over 313, two strokes behind first-round leader and No. 37 Iowa State (31-over 311). No. 19 Oklahoma State is two strokes behind the Lady Bears in third at 35-over 315, followed by No. 31 Oklahoma (36-over 316) in fourth and No. 11 Texas A&M (38-over 318) in fifth.

"Playing in 30 mile-per-hour winds, which were gusting up to 50 miles per hour, and playing through two weather delays doesn't make for a fun day on the course," first-year head coach Jay Goble said. "The silver lining is that we fought really hard.

"In the worst conditions of the day, Hayley was 1-under on her last six holes," Goble said. "We fought hard at the finish. After we posted our score, we kept seeing our name climbing up the leaderboard. We knew it would be difficult, but we have to keep working out on the course."

Senior Chelsey Cothran and freshman Stani Schiavone are tied for 10th overall at 8-over 78, three strokes behind Davis and the other two leaders. Senior Jaclyn Jansen is tied for 26th at 12-over 82, while senior Valerie Sternebeck is tied for 36th at 14-over 84.

Facing the extremely windy conditions, Baylor's golfers managed to card only four birdies during the first round, two of which came from Schiavone. Jansen and Davis accounted for the other two birdies for the Lady Bears.

The second round of the 2012 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship will tee off Saturday at 8 a.m. CDT. Baylor and Iowa State will be paired in the final tee groups beginning at 10:40 a.m. CDT. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
