BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the rebounding effort:
I think that we are a very good rebounding team, but I also think that West Virginia got a lot of second chance points in the middle of the second half. We teach it to our players, and they work on that. Nina Davis and Khadijiah Cave are very good rebounders.
On sophomore guard Lanay Montgomery:
Honestly, when you look at the film, she hasn't done that for her team. For her to do that today, should be a huge confidence boost for her. She gave them a big presence in the paint today, and she was most of the reason why we went to the zone defense. She was posting up and scoring.
On junior guard Bria Holmes:
I thought we did a good job on guarding Bria. She is a phenomenal player, and we threw a lot of different players at her to guard her. As they were guarding her, there was a few things that we wanted to take away from her that I thought we did about three-fourths of the time.
On the fast start in the first half:
We have not started that well all year. I reminded our players that we usually don't start out as well as we did, and we were still only up by six or eight points. We knew where we were playing, and we knew they had a bunch of juniors and seniors on the floor. We had four sophomores and a junior out there for the majority of the game.
WEST VIRGINIA POSTGAME QUOTES
West Virginia Coach Mike Carey
Opening Statement:
Once again, we had chances. We missed 10 foul shots. Our free throw percentage was not good, and our three-point percentage was not good. We played hard, we played aggressive, and we only gave up 10 offensive rebounds today which is pretty good. The problem was that we gave up one or two at the end of the game. I thought that Lanay (Montgomery) played really well. She continues to get better, and I thought she did a great job. I thought Linda Stepney did a great job as well. It's a little frustrating when you look at the hustle points. Second chance points - us 13, and Baylor with 10. Fast break points - us 10, and Baylor with six. Then you look at the bench points - they had 31, and we had five. It's been the same story all year. We're not getting much from the bench. We played two girls for 40 minutes. Lanay (Montgomery) played 32 and Averee would have played 40 if she didn't get into foul trouble. Averee getting in foul trouble hurt us at times. Baylor has a good team, they play hard, and they have a lot of people who can score. I thought our girls battled, it's just a little frustrating right now. I know our players are frustrated. We're just not getting stops when we need too. I told the team after the Texas game that we're playing hard enough to win, but we just don't know how to win yet. Last year's team knew how to win, this year's team doesn't know how to win yet. They don't know how to get a big stop, or get a big score, or get a big rebound. Instead we're fouling and we're giving up offensive rebounds. Early in the game we were taking shots and it was creating fast breaks for them. We haven't had an easy start. We had to play Texas and Oklahoma on the road, and then come back here and play Baylor. We have proved that we can play with all of them, but it just comes down to getting the players and the bodies.
On replacing Averee Fields after she was in foul trouble:
We had a two point lead and they ran a nose play where they went weak side, and we ran into a pick, and then they hit a three. It's our inexperienced kids. I felt that if we could have kept the lead, and have Averee back in there with under 4 minutes left, that we could have put some pressure on them.
On the bench players:
When we have to go to the bench it's tough. You look at their bench points (31) and ours (5). It's going to be like this all year. We just don't have the experience coming off the bench, and we don't have the people concentrating coming off the bench. We bring people off the bench, and Baylor is getting layups because our players are just standing there and not looking behind them. It's just stuff like that. It's frustrating to the veterans and it's frustrating to me. Here's the thing, if they worked harder in practice then it wouldn't bother me as much. I just have to play people because we need the bodies.
On winning close games:
Last year's team was a veteran team. That team knew how to win. This year the opponents are taking some of our players out of the game and other people aren't stepping up. It takes all five to get a big defensive stop, not just three or four. We're just not getting that done.
On senior guard Linda Stepney:
Linda (Stepney) can play, but she has been playing so many minutes. It is what it is. She was playing with a lot of energy at the end of the game.
