BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On changing up the lineup tonight:
"I just thought we needed to rest some players. I thought that we needed more energy. We needed to press and that was a good lineup to press with, except Sune (Agbuke). I left her in there a little bit longer than I wanted to at the beginning because it was senior night. I wanted to shake it up a little bit just to get out of the monotony of getting off to slow starts, and I thought they really did good. I thought we were fine until the second half, and then I thought everybody got complacent. I just played a lot of players, and that's something I wanted to do and planned to do. Sometimes when you do that, you just get out of sync and rhythm."
On if the team is mentally fatigued right now:
"Nothing any different than what you see across the country. South Carolina gets beat yesterday. Louisville gets beat yesterday. You're going to see that this time of year. That's what happens. You have desperate teams who have to play out of their mind to host, to even get to go to the tournament, not to mention that there's Baylor across the front of the jersey. Not to mention that we already won the championship. There are so many things I could come up with--youth. So, no, nothing any more than is happening everywhere else. I guess everywhere across the country we're all tired. Maybe I'm tired. Maybe the team's tired. I don't know, but it's not anything any different than you see happening everywhere."
On the 50 fouls in the game:
"We fouled too much, and that's a part of why we lost the lead. We started the second half fouling a post player on a three - part of that's communication. That's a problem we've had all year. I've got a very quiet team. I've told them many times in good games and close games that they're going to get burned if they don't communicate. They're just not vocal. They don't talk a lot. That's something we work on every day."
Sophomore Nina Davis
On bouncing back from the two losses:
"It was very important for our confidence and for getting back on track seeing that the Big 12 Conference Tournament is about to come up. Those two losses we had were very uncharacteristic of us and we just needed to get back on track, and I feel like we did that tonight."
On the second half:
"I feel like at the beginning of the game we came out with a lot of energy. We had a lot of fire. We were really pumped and excited. I guess after those two losses, we just expected to come out and attack, but in the second half we kind of got complacent. They started to shoot jump shots and we started to leave people open. That's just something that can't happen at this part of the season."
Junior Niya Johnson
On setting a record for assists:
"It means a lot. The hard work is paying off. And like I said before, I can't get those assists without my teammates making the baskets. I appreciate them putting the ball in the hoop, and as long as we get the win I can't complain."
On starting the game pressing:
"We were just trying to start the game with more energy. We were just trying to start the game attacking, changing up the defense and giving them the unexpected, and I thought we did pretty well at that tonight."
TEXAS TECH POSTGAME QUOTES
Texas Tech Head Coach Candi Whitaker
On Baylor's fast start:
"No, I don't think we were surprised by it. We looked like we were surprised by it. We know they typically press more in the first half. Obviously, we didn't handle it like we needed to, but we will learn from that."
On what went right on their second-half run:
"I got to give a lot of credit, first to Minta Spears, she did a great job on keeping people organized in their position. Communication on what we ran and the execution of that, and then we were more aggressive. I think Minta [Spears] was aggressive getting to the free throw line, Amber (Battle) was much more aggressive. We got going a little bit. Our execution was just much better. Our tempo was better and we were more aggressive."
On her lineup being able to come back:
"I really like the lineup that we had. On that comeback we just hung with those kids that were out there battling and found a way to get back to the game. They earned the bonus in the first media [timeout] and that's never a good sign. We just continued to rotate all, and play people with three or four fouls at times. (We) just had to roll the dice."
On being down by 26 points and things to work on going into the Big 12 tournament:
"I didn't like our execution at all in the first half. I thought we were really timid. When we went to the rim, we looked like we were looking for someone to block our shot instead of going and finishing it. We didn't have enough ball movement. We weren't using or setting screens well. We weren't changing speeds to set things up. Baylor is a good team and you are going to have to have more deception on how you run your offense and how you set new screens."
Texas Tech Senior Amber Battle
On making a 16-1 run:
"We just decided that we didn't want to lose and we decided to play with more intensity."
On if there was any strategy change or just a change on the mindset:
"We just played harder."
