March 9, 2015 WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's golf team is headed to Kane'ohe, O'ahu, Hawaii to compete in the 30th-annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii. Baylor is making its first-ever appearance at the tournament.
The two-day, 54-hole event will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at the par-72, 6,099-yard Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course. The 15-team field includes Baylor, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee, Montana, Nevada, No. 13 Oklahoma State, Osaka Gakuin, Southern Illinois, No. 15 Texas A&M, UTEP and Western Illinois.
"I haven't been to this course, but our assistant coach Mary Michael (Maggio) says it's a neat golf course right on the water," head coach Jay Goble said. "The golf course is actually on an army base. We'll probably get some strong winds off the water."
Baylor's lineup for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational features senior Hayley Davis, freshman Dylan Kim, junior Laura Lonardi, freshman Giovana Maymon, and sophomore Louise Gateau-Chovelon. Junior Natalia Perez will join the team as an individual.
"I'm excited to get Louise back in the lineup," Goble said. "Our team chemistry is really good with her in the lineup."
Baylor is the third-highest ranked team in the 15-team field, coming in at No. 30 in the latest GolfStat rankings. Oklahoma State at No. 13 and Texas A&M at No. 15 are the only other top-50 teams competing at Kane'ohe Klipper.
"This is a tournament meant for some fun spring break competition," Goble said. "It's meant to be a bit of a wind down for the team and a good experience for the girls."
Both rounds will be 8 a.m. local time, 1 p.m. CT shotgun starts. In Tuesday's opening round, Perez will tee off from No. 18, Gateau-Chovelon from No. 12, Maymon from No. 11, Lonardi and Kim from No. 10, and Davis from No. 9.
