BAYLOR POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On Breanna Lewis:
"She was having to score over 6-foot-7, you would have trouble too if you had to score over 6-foot-7. You know we are big, and I was minus a post player in [Beatrice] Mompremier, who sprained her ankle so we did not bring her but that is another 6-foot-4 or 6-foot-5 kid. She did get some touches, they were throwing it into her and Kalani [Brown] did exactly what we told her to do and that was to make her make a move to score over you. Do not give her layups and I thought Kalani did a good job. I thought our guards were very active with their hands, this may be the most steals we have had all season in a game. I am not certain of that but we did have a lot of steals and deflections tonight."
On team performance:
"I think this is one of the more complete performances, especially against the zone. When you see zone that much you tend to be hot and cold with the perimeter shooting. I thought we were very solid start to finish. We had only eight turnovers. I thought the defense was very good and everybody that came in the game did something good. [Lauren] Cox comes off the bench and scores a double-double, you had [Calveion] Landrum come in, who has not been getting many minutes, but the first pass to her she knocks down a three with confidence. She fouled out in ten minutes so we will rag her all the way home but it was just a good night for us."
On defending Kindred Wesemann:
"This kid [Alexis Prince], night in and night out is assigned to the best perimeter player on the opposing team and she just fights through screens, she has the length, she is 6-foot-1 on the perimeter and can alter shots. To do what she did on the offensive end too is pretty special. I do not know, she is the one that did it. She fought and was bound and determined not to let her score. I think the only bucket [Wesemann] got was on Dekeiya [Cohen] that was an and-one. We did not do anything special like double team [Breanna] Lewis or switch all the time, we just played normal defense. The thing that is hard to sell to kids, and not just on the women's side but the men's side too is defense. If you look at the national stats, we lead the country in field goal percentage defense. We take great pride in that because she [Alexis Prince] is not going to hit 25 every night and we all will not be clicking at the same time, but if you can just stay consistent with your defensive effort, good things will happen for you."
KANSAS STATE POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement:
"Well from our end there is not a whole lot to say. I was not pleased in the way we competed at all. If you take Karyla Middlebrook out of the mix, we had four starters go for 27 from the field. That is not going to win a lot of games, but it is not going to beat a talented team like Baylor."
On Baylor's progression having a snowball effect:
"I think with them, there are two things that you have to choose in some areas. The last time we played them they just pounded us on the glass, angles and getting to the free-throw line. We tried to make them make jumpers early so we could be in better positions to rebound. Alexis Prince was obviously hot early. Our offensive attack was not good. We felt like we could have been in a five or six point game, but we could not score. They shot 66 percent in the first quarter, and cooled off in the second quarter. I did not like the way we competed at either end of the floor. "
On Baylor's size:
"In terms of doing what we felt like our game plan was coming in, what we needed to do we were poor, in every area."
Senior Guard Karyla Middlebrook
On playing as physical of a team as Baylor:
"The SEC has a couple of teams like that. They have Tennessee and South Carolina. It was more of what we needed to do and not necessarily what Baylor was doing."
On discouraging feeling during game:
"It is just discouraging whenever you see the scoreboard and it is that big of a gap regardless of how many points I personally have."
