Bears competed at Pre-Nationals and Arturo Barrios Invitational Saturday.
WACO, Texas – Baylor cross country came away with 21st (women) and 24th (men) place finishes at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, while the women's team placed 33rd at Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis., Saturday on a busy day of racing.
Alison Andrews-Paul led the way for the women's team at Pre-Nationals, which featured a field of 35 teams and 234 runners.
"It was a huge field, and a big thing to adjust to for our new kids," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "That's a big race, and it requires you to put yourself in it pretty quickly. If you don't, you're out in the back and will never see it again. I thought Alison did a really good job of putting herself in it. She went out and really competed early."
Missing from the Baylor lineup was Sarah Antrich, who was a late scratch after getting sick the night before.
"It was a little unfortunate that we didn't get to have Sarah today," Capron said. "I think she's been doing a really great job at practice, and she just picked up something here and was feeling under the weather before we even started. We chose not to race her and get her ready for the conference meet."
Brooke Gilmore, Celia Holmes, Gabby Satterlee, and Mazie Larsen were the other scoring runners for the Bears.
Connor Laktasic led the Bears in College Station, placing 66th with an 8,000-meter time of 25:48.9. Henry Huff, TJ Sugg, Seth Brown, and Jeff Kirwin were the other scoring runners for Baylor.
"Moving to conference, we're just going to have to improve on our execution," Capron said. "Connor ran pretty well, and Henry was able to put a solid race together. We need some more of our guys to get healthy. We missed Cal (Johnston) today, and we're definitely missing Jeremy (Meadows). Our guys need to be able to step up a little bit, and we need to put them in a better position to do that."
Scoring for the women's team at the Arturo Barrios Invitational were Aaliyah Miller, Hana Marsheck, Haley Everroad, Katy Parsons, and Isabella Lackner.
"That was a hard race for them," Capron said. "We were missing the people that they usually work off of. That's a for sure challenge and always will be when you have your team split up like that. I think we can maybe find some support for the squad that we have going into the conference meet. We'll choose the ones that looked the best from that group and go forward with them."
Next up for Baylor is the 2018 Big 12 Conference Championships in Ames, Iowa, which will take place Oct. 26.
"We just need to continue to get our work done and get everybody healthy that we can," Capron said. "We're going to get ready for the conference meet and make sure we put our best foot forward there."
