After struggling in bigger meets at Notre Dame and Pre-Nationals at Wisconsin, where the fields had 157 and 234 runners, respectively, the smaller fields at Friday's Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa, will be a welcome sight for the Baylor women.
"To be in the Pre-Nat or Notre Dame meet, you have to have all your irons in the fire, and I don't know that we've been there yet," coach Jon Capron said. "And the ones we've needed to show up a little more have been young. We have a lot of people that are new to this, or young to this, at least, that we're expecting a lot out of. That may have been a big ask.
"So, going forward, I just said, 'Hey, this is all I need you to do. We need you to run your best today. You don't need to go out crazy like we did at Notre Dame or even Pre-Nat.' I think it will be a lot more in their space, and I think that will breed success."
With a max of 10 runners per team, there will be no more than 80 runners in the women's 6,000-meter race that kicks things off at 10 a.m. at the ISU Cross Country Course. The men's 8K will follow at 11 a.m., with video streaming and live results available at www.big12sports.com.
"We're still waiting to hit on all cylinders, really," Capron said. "We're excited for the opportunity, excited to go up there and test ourselves against the Big 12 Conference. . . . I think being able to kind of say, 'Ladies, we need to beat this team, and 'Guys, this is the team we're going to beat,' that's going to make all the difference in the world for us."
The Baylor women were 11th in the latest NCAA South Central Region rankings, behind fellow Big 12 schools Texas (No. 2) and TCU (No. 7). Junior Alison Andrews-Paul, sophomore Brooke Gilmore and freshman Celia Holmes, scoring runners in each of their four meets, will be joined by juniors Gabby Satterlee, Haley Everroad, Hana Marsheck, Katy Parsons and Lindsay Walton, sophomore Sarah Antrich and freshman Mazie Larsen.
Iowa State's 17th-ranked women are favored to repeat, with Oklahoma State and Texas listed among others receiving votes in the national poll.
"We've definitely had a season that hasn't met our expectations," Andrews-Paul said "But, we know this is our chance to prove we are a really good team. We sat down at the beginning and talked about our goals, and we are aiming for top three. We always have been. That is definitely in our minds."
On the men's side, Baylor's team has been thinned out by injuries and illness. Sophomore Jeremy Meadows and freshman Cal Johnston are both out, leaving junior Matt Henderson and sophomores Connor Laktasic and TJ Sugg as the only consistent scoring runners.
"We've had a rough start, but this is the meet to really show what we can do and show what our training and our hard work is about," Laktasic said. "It will be nice to go in there and run and run well and have it all pay off. I think this is the meet to do it."
Joining that group is seniors Seth Brown, Henry Huff and Jeff Kirwin, sophomore J.B. Sandlund and redshirt freshman Ryan Day, a walk-on who is making his official collegiate debut. He ran unattached at the season-opening Bear Twilight Invitational and finished 27th, just three seconds behind Johnston.
"We're pressing him into service rather quickly," Capron said of Day, who ran at Midway High School with Johnston. "But, he has the capability of being able to jump right in there and help, which is impressive. He's only done a couple workouts with us, but he's looked good in them. So, we're going to try to get him going and see where he can land."
Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Texas are the teams to beat on the men's side, with the Bears falling out of the regional rankings after the Notre Dame meet. The NCAA South Central Region Championships will be held in two weeks, Nov. 9, in College Station.
"We've got our work cut out for us, our conference is not weak by any means, but we're certainly capable of running with the girls and the boys at this meet," Capron said. "This is when it matters. We could garner a lot of confidence going into that regional meet if we can put it together at the conference meet. I believe we can, and I think they believe they can, on both sides."
AMES, Iowa – Baylor cross country will compete in the 2018 Big 12 Cross Country Championships Friday morning at the ISU Cross Country Course. The women's 6,000-meter race will kick things off at 10 a.m. CT, followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 11 a.m. CT.
"We're still waiting to hit on all cylinders, really," associate head coach Jon Capron said. "We're excited for the opportunity, excited to go up there and test ourselves against the Big 12 Conference."
The Baylor women's team is led by Alison Andrews-Paul, Brooke Gilmore, Gabby Satterlee, and Celia Holmes. Also competing in the 6K race for the Bears will be Sarah Antrich, Haley Everroad, Mazie Larsen, Hana Marsheck, Katy Parsons, and Lindsay Walton.
"Top for the ladies is going to be Alison, Brooke, and behind her Gabby, Celia," Capron said of the women's lineup. "That fifth spot is going to be a pretty good mystery. It could be some of the freshmen that are stepping up, or it could be some of the upperclassmen."
Running for the Baylor men's team in the 8,000-meter race will be Seth Brown, Ryan Day, Matt Henderson, Henry Huff, Jeff Kirwin, Connor Laktasic, J.B. Sandlund and TJ Sugg.
"Ryan Day is going to make the trip, so we're pressing him into service rather quickly," Capron said. "But, he has the capability of being able to jump right in there and help, which is impressive. TJ is ready to run a lot better. Connor's looking great right now. Behind those, I'm expecting some of the seniors that are still here to be in that top five. Matt will be ready to go, as will Henry, Seth and Jeff Kirwin."
The women's race features seven regionally ranked teams, while the men's race has five. Iowa State is ranked 17th in the women's national top 30, while Iowa State (6th) and Oklahoma State (23rd) are representing the Big 12 in the men's national rankings.
"I think it's going to be a good race," Capron said. "The course is nice, as it always is, at Iowa State. And I like the field size. I think that's going to be something that's really going to help us. We've struggled a little bit with the larger field sizes the rest of this year. And I think being able to kind of say, 'Ladies, we need to beat this team,' and 'Guys, this is the team we're going to beat.' I think that's going to make all the difference in the world for us."
Following the Big 12 Championships, the Bears will shift their focus to the NCAA South Central Region Championships Nov. 9 in College Station, Texas.
