Bears face Mountaineers, Cyclones in final 2018 Big 12 road contests

Baylor Bear Insider
Since joining the Big 12 six years ago, West Virginia has been easily the most dominant soccer team in the league, winning five regular-season titles and losing just two conference games in that stretch.
So, when the 16th-ranked Mountaineers (7-2-3, 3-0-0) opened league play with three dominant shutout victories, "the only people who are surprised right now are the people that aren't in our conference," said Baylor coach Paul Jobson.
"It's hard to say they struggled. You look at their schedule, and you see they played some of the best teams in the country week-in and week-out," Jobson said of West Virginia winning just one of its first six games (1-2-3). "We knew it was coming, and we knew they were going to be a dominant team. You have to respect them, but you have to play your game and give yourself the best opportunity to get three points on the road."
Baylor (9-4-0, 2-1-0), 24th in the latest coaches' poll and No. 9 in the NCAA RPI rankings, will get that chance when the Bears face the Mountaineers at 6 p.m. CDT Friday in Morgantown. West Virginia leads the all-time series, 5-0-1, the only blemish being a 1-1 tie in the first meeting six years ago in Morgantown.
"We know we can compete," Jobson said. "We've competed really well with them over the years. We haven't gotten the result we want yet, but we're going to prepare the way we always do and go in and battle our way, hopefully, to victory."
The Bears swept a split-schedule weekend series, holding on for a 1-0 victory at home over TCU and then defeating Texas Tech, 2-0, on the road last Sunday.
"I think something we learned last weekend is to use our will more than our way," said senior forward Kennedy Brown. "It's good to establish that we know on a Sunday game, and it's at Texas Tech and we're traveling, that we can find a way to win."
Jobson said the Bears found a way to win at Tech, even when they "probably weren't at our best that day."
"Great teams find a way to win, no matter what the circumstances are," Jobson said. "So, I was proud of them for that. I think getting a victory on the road in conference gives you some momentum when you have to turn around and do it again."
While West Virginia has been shut out three times, Baylor has scored in 13 consecutive games, one off the program record and the best stretch to start a season in school history. Julie James has scored a career-best six goals, while Raegan Padgett, Camryn Wendlandt, Jackie Crowther and freshman Guiliana Cunningham have scored four apiece.
"A lot of people say, 'Oh, y'all are going to play West Virginia,' but we want to go in saying, 'They have to play Baylor,''' Padgett said. "We're a great team, in my opinion. It's just knowing that we're good and playing like how we know we can play, just putting the pieces together."
Baylor closes out its road schedule with a matchup against Iowa State (2-9-2, 0-2-1) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Ames. The Cyclones, who host 13th-ranked Texas on Friday, have lost two in a row after opening league play with a 2-2 tie at TCU.
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Baylor soccer (9-4-0, 2-1-0 Big 12) will play its final two regular season road matches, facing No. 16 West Virginia (7-2-3, 3-0-0 Big 12) on Friday at 7 p.m. ET in Morgantown before crossing back into the central time zone to face Iowa State (2-9-2, 0-2-1 Big 12) on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Ames.
A pair of wins will give Baylor at least a share of first place in the conference standings, with WVU entering the weekend in sole possession of the No. 1 spot with a 3-0 Big 12 record.
The Mountaineers have notched wins over Texas Tech, TCU, and Kansas State, and have yet to surrender a goal in conference play.
Iowa State grinded out a 2-2 draw at TCU before suffering losses at Texas Tech and at Kansas. The Cyclones host No. 13 Texas on Friday prior to facing BU on Sunday.
