Bears down Mountaineers on golden goal in first overtime
THE RUNDOWN
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Baylor soccer (10-4-0, 3-1-0 Big 12) grinded into the 95th minute of a scoreless tie with No. 16 West Virginia (7-3-3, 3-1-0 Big 12) before connecting on a golden goal for a 1-0 victory on Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Despite facing large deficits in shots (19-4), shots on goal (9-2) and corners (11-2), the difference came down to a career night for sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt, making a career-high nine saves in goal and working her third-straight shutout in the posts.
The entirety of the scoring in the match came in the 95th for the Bears, with BU taking a free kick just inside of the midfield line.
Wandt moved upfield for the Bears to take the kick, serving a deep ball that entered a scrum of BU and WVU defenders.
The ball was headed out by Sarah King, finding Camryn Wendlandt free to the left side of the box.
The junior forward drove home the game-winning, golden goal, giving BU the 1-0 victory in BU's first-ever win over the Mountaineers in seven tries.
STAT OF THE MATCH
In addition to being the first-ever win for the Bears over the Mountaineers, with the all-time series beginning in 2012 when WVU joined the Big 12, it is also the first time that West Virginia has ever lost a Big 12 home match in Morgantown. The Mountaineers entered the match 24-0-2 all-time in home conference matches, with one of those two ties earned by BU back in 2012 in WVU's first season in the Big 12.
NOTES
* Baylor and West Virginia met for the seventh time, with the Bears improving to 1-5-1 in the series and 1-5-0 under head coach Paul Jobson.
* Camryn Wendlandt scored her fifth goal on the season and became just the second Bear to score two or more game-winning goals this season (Giuliana Cunningham).
* Sarah King picked up her first assist of the season, the 20th of her collegiate career.
* The Bears continue to score at a clip that ranks them among the most productive offenses in the country, scoring at least one goal for 14-straight matches, the longest streak for BU since going 14-straight matches from the end of 2012 into 2013, and the longest streak to start a season since the program's 1996 inaugural season (scored in all 21 matches).
* Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt picked up her seventh solo shutout of the season and the 16th of her BU career, including her third-straight clean sheet.
* Wandt made a career-high nine saves for the Bears, earning her second-straight shutout in matches where the opponent collected double-digit corner kicks.
