Not that they didn't miss a beat without senior All-American center Kalani Brown, but the fourth-ranked Baylor Lady Bears still had more than enough weapons to dispose of the Southern University Jaguars, 94-49, Thursday night.
The 6-foot-7 Brown, who had started 64 consecutive games and played in 113 straight, suffered a Grade 1 ankle sprain in Thursday's practice and sat out a game for the first time in her career.
"She rolled it on somebody's foot," said coach Kim Mulkey, whose team improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 at home. "No need to play her tonight. I hope we can get her ready for (Las) Vegas."
All 10 active players scored, including a record-tying seven players in double figures. Freshman guard Honesty Scott-Grayson was an efficient 6-of-7 from the floor and scored 13 of her game- and career-high 15 points in the first half.
Baylor shot a sizzling 75 percent from the field in the first half (24-of-32) and was up 59-27 at the break. The Lady Bears scored just 35 points combined in the third and fourth quarters while cooling off to 50 percent from the field (10-of-20) and 58 percent from the line (15-of-26).
"We just seem, for whatever reason, just to miss free throws," Mulkey said. "We've just got to keep plugging away. As you see, we didn't score the ball very good in the second half, either. Was that fatigue, was that focus, concentration? I don't know."
The offense was definitely clicking in the first half, hitting 12-of-16 in the first and second quarters.
Grad transfer Chloe Jackson threaded the needle on a pass from half court that found a streaking Moon Ursin for a fast break layup that gave the Lady Bears a 55-23 lead with 2:12 left in the first half.
"Moon is the fastest person I've ever played with," said Jackson, who had 11 points and a career-high eight assists. "I saw her out of the corner of my eye. I knew to make a good pass, make sure the defense didn't get a hand on it. I knew she was going to catch it and finish it. Like I said, she's so fast."
Things got a little chippy in the second half, with the Jaguars' Sarai Blissett ejected for a flagrant 2 foul at the 5:38 mark in the third quarter and Cailain Williams going to the bench with a foul and technical with 2:34 left in the game. Southern was called for 33 fouls in the game.
"(The officials) said they thought she swung back and hit the young lady (Smith) in the head," Southern coach Carlos Funchess said. "It was an unfortunate incident. She's our most athletic post player and the one person we have who can rebound the basketball."
Mulkey said the Lady Bears "were good in keeping their composure" through a very physical second half.
"We have to keep our composure in situations like that," said 6-4 junior forward Lauren Cox, who finished with 10 points, five blocks, four rebounds and three assists. "I was that way when I was a freshman – hot-headed and that kind of thing. Us upperclassmen, we just have to remind them that it's not worth it. If you get into something with the other team, you're going to have to sit out a game."
Sophomore Moon Ursin and freshmen Queen Egbo, Caitlin Bickle and Smith all scored 11 for Baylor, while Courtney Parsons had 11 for the visiting Jaguars.
Baylor goes on the road to face South Dakota State and Georgetown at the South Point Shootout on Nov. 23-24 in Las Vegas, Nev.
