Women's Golf Tied for 12th in Palos Verdes

THE RUNDOWN
PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Baylor women's golf is tied for 12th place after shooting 16-over-par 300 in Sunday's first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
BU (+16) is ahead of five top-50 ranked teams, including No. 49 San Diego State (+19), No. 28 Tennessee (+19), No 33 UNLV (+22), No. 8 Oklahoma State (+23) and No. 23 Wake Forest (+26).
Baylor is seven shots back of the top five with 36 holes remaining. The Bears trail No. 39 Arizona (+1), No. 6 Arizona State (+1), No. 3 Alabama (+8), No. 1 UCLA (+8), No. 12 Northwestern (+9), No. 11 USC (+11), No. 5 Stanford (+11), No. 18 Florida (+12), No. 2 Duke (+13), No. 25 Washington (+13) and No. 10 Texas (+14). BU is tied with Ohio State (+16), the lone team in the field not ranked in the GolfStat top 50.
The Bears got a boost from freshman Gurleen Kaur, who shot 2-under 69 in her first collegiate round after graduating a semester early from Houston's Cy Woods High School. Kaur is tied for second place after making four birdies, and she was clean over her final 11 holes with nine pars and two birdies. Kaur is in a three-way tie for second place in the 96-player field and trails only Arizona State's Olivia Mehaffey (-3).
Fellow freshman Diane Baillieux posted the team's second-best score with a 2-over 73 to sit in a tie for 19th place. Senior Amy Lee and sophomore Fiona Liddell shot matching rounds of 8-over 79 to round out the Baylor scorecard. Lee and Liddell are tied for 75th place.
Junior Maria Vesga carded a 12-over 83 to sit in 94th place, and senior Giovana Maymon, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 87th place following a 10-over 81.
HIGHLIGHTS
" Baylor is tied for seventh in the 18-team field in par-4 scoring at 16-over 4.29, tied for 11th in par-5 scoring at 1-over 5.07 and ranks tied for 17th in par-3 scoring at 11-over 3.55.
" Baylor is tied for ninth in the field with 10 birdies, six of which came from freshman Gurleen Kaur (4) and Diane Baillieux (2). Amy Lee also had two birdies.
" Kaur is tied for second in the 96-player field in par-4 scoring at 1-under 3.91.
" Kaur, Baillieux and Lee are tied for 11th in par-5 scoring at 1-under 4.67.
" Kaur and Fiona Liddell are tied for 13th in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00.
" Kaur's four birdies tied for fourth-most in the first round.
STAT OF THE DAY
4 - Gurleen Kaur made four birdies in her first collegiate round, which tied for fourth-most in the field. She began her round from the 10th tee and made birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 before giving those shots back with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 16. She then played clean the rest of the round, sinking nine pars and a pair of birdies on Nos. 5 and 7.
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor players are in the final pairings to tee off from No.10 for Monday's second round. BU golfers are paired with players from San Diego State, Tennessee and UNLV. Vesga is up first at 12:17 p.m. CT, and she'll be followed in 11-minute intervals by Liddell, Lee, Baillieux and Kaur, respectively.
